I walked out behind the house this evening and decided to try and capture some butterfly photos in the clover field. The field was filled with wheat a month ago but has since been cut, and is now covered with clover and Queen Anne's Lace.

I was amazed at all the Tiger Swallowtail and Monarchs that were feeding this evening on the clover flowers. I must have seen at least fifty butterflies in a 45 minute span. It seemed no matter which way I walked I would run into a Tiger Swallowtail or Monarch.

The Cabbage and Sulfurs were so numerous I hardly paid any attention to them. I thought to myself, this is truly a butterfly enthusiasts dream field.

I took a lot of shots of the Swallowtails and Monarchs and also a few of the Sulfurs. The sun was very low on the horizon which illuminated this Sulfurs wings in a neat way, so I chose this photo to post.

I'm pretty sure from the photo in my guide book that this is a Southern Dogface (Colias cesonia), which is a member of the Sulfur family.

Did you know....that "red" and purple to me Clover has mucho more anti-cancer fighting abilities than any other natural herb?! I used to find very small patches of it on our wilderness property in the mountains..but it was rare as rare could be...I had not thought much about Ohio and clover...see...out here it is almost exclusively white...and same in the California...but this is way cool..

Of course you butterfly capture is fine...especially with the back lighting..I really like this one and am going to add it to my special uses of sun catagory...Really nice work/hobby/fun Ron. As good as it gets.

Hello Ron, how great it must be to see so many butterflies. They are very rare around here. We get the Monarchs and white cabbage ones, but not many more.
Super shot of the Southern Dogface, so crisp and clear. Great colours of it and the clover. I like how the sun is shining through the wings

Nice shot. The sunlight flitering through the wings and leaves look great. The patterns of the leaves are also a treat to watch.

Very nice butterfly macro again. I like backlight with very well looking wings, almost transparent. Good colours and composition with clover.

Hello Ron,
I like very much these backlit shots which show all the wing markings, by transparency as it were. What a lovely way to end the day. Well done.
Alan

Hi Ron,

The sun shining through the wings is a nice change from the typical butterfly portrait, gives a feel for being in a sunny summer meadow, very nice.

Thanks,
John

Hi Ron,

I saw one butterfly flying around yesterday and you have a yard full of them. Not fair. This picture is absolutely beautiful - the lighting is amazing. The glowing butterfly with lovely colors and fine details found the perfect beautiful flower to pose on. Wonderful colors, clarity and composition.
