Rufous-winged Sparrow
(Aimophila carpalis)

This small sparrow is found on flat, dry grasslands that are host to thorn-scrub habitats from southern Arizona to northwestern Mexico. The species is shy and elusive and is difficult to see except when the male is singing from exposed perches.

slender sparrow with a gray face, rufous crown, and brown streak behind the eye. Fairly large-billed. Both sexes are brownish above with dark streaks; underparts are offwhite, unstreaked. Rusty patch on wings. Tail is relatively long and rounded.

Breeds in flat, dessert grasslands scattered with thorn-scrub including bunch grasses, mesquite, or cholla. This species is also found along washes with sandy bottoms and vegetated slopes. It is a year-round resident of south-central through southeastern Arizona south to the southeastern Sonora and central Sinaloa regions of Mexico. Although it continues to be fairly common, the species' limited geographic range puts it at risk.

You know...back a while ago I mentioned that it appears you are always "looking up". Now that works in photos such as this..and it is a good photo, but I suddenly realized why you look up so much. It's where you came from!!! I remember my first trip to NYC...I should haev been tripping all over people because I never had seen buildings like that and I was watching where I was going 'cus I was always looking up!:-)

Beautiful image Jane,
Nice composition and color, was this guy singing when you captured him? I know it's hot out there right now so maybe he is just panting a little from the intense heat your experiencing.
Love the green leaves against that gorgeous light blue sky. We don't get blue skies here in Ohio all that often, since we are so close to the Great Lakes. We seem to have a lot of cloudy days and gray skies.
Thanks for sharing another beautiful image.
Ron

Hello Jane,
You are lucky to have this rarity close to you and you made a fine capture of it even to show the rufous shoulder, a characteristic of the Rufous-winged Sparrow. Nice composition with the foliage of the tree where he perches against a neutral BG that looks like a hazy sky.
TFS this beauty,
Ivan
