There are so few butterflies here that I'm sad to say I have never learned about them. I looked this one up and it looks similar to many and identical to none. Perhaps someone can ID it for me.

Thank you Ivan, for identifying this. I can always count on you.

Small White

The Small White (Pieris rapae) is a small to mid-sized butterfly species of the Yellows-and-Whites family Pieridae. It is also commonly known as the Small Cabbage White. The names "Cabbage Butterfly" and "Cabbage White" can also refer to the Large White.

It is widespread across Europe, North Africa and Asia and has also been accidentally introduced to North America, Australia and New Zealand where they have become pests on cultivated cabbages and other mustard family crops.

In appearance it looks like a smaller version of the Large White. The upperside is creamy white with black tips to the forewings. Females also have two black spots in the center of the forewings. Its underwings are yellowish with black speckles. It is sometimes mistaken for a moth due to its plain-looking appearance.

Hello jane,
Nice to see you post a butterfly shot. As it happens you have taken a shot of a European Small White (Pieris rapae), an imported species.
This is a fine closed-wing view with good sharpness and well composed on the lantana flowers.
TFS,
Ivan

I am lousy at ID'ing too...as you may know by my lack of response to one of yours a few days ago...I rarely see them although they are here...but rarely see them when I can capture them...so consider yourself lucky I guess..a fine blending of pastels don't you think? I like pastels...and sometimes the desert is full of them...with certain exceptions of the dark red rocks in the part of your state...very nice Jane!
Bob

Hello jane,

What a nice shot of this butterfly. You have made good use of the light showing so well the structure of the wings. You also rendered well the reachness of color tones. Butterfly and flower are creating a nice contrast too.

Thank you for sharing,
Cristian

Hi Jane.
What a nice picture. I like this subject with your performance. Wonderful surroundings and flowers and superb reflection of all features of the cute butterfly. POV is amazing and cropping/composition are simply spot on. Fine vivid colours, alive lighting and sharpness of the butterfly, leaves and some tiny flowers. My best wishes and compliments.

Hello Jane,
Great shot of this Cabbage Butterfly, you have captured it perfectly. I know how hard it is to get good results with white subjects, so I'm always impressed when someone does just that.
This is a wonderful example of how using correct shutter speed and exposure results in a beautiful image!! Great notes!
Ron

This is a lovely shot of thesmall white, my dear Jane!

Hello Jane,
It's no doubt too hot for butterflies in your area. Here there are uch fewer this year due to the heat. But you managed to get a very fine capture of this White butterfly on the pretty flower showing very sharp details and fine colours. Well done!
