| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
| Sharp-shinned and Cooper’s hawks are common hawks in the Ohio area. Despite their common occurrence, these hawks present a significant identification problem for birders. Throughout the year, there is great variation in plumage and in size for these two species. Therefore, perhaps more than any other similar-looking pair, no single field mark is likely to distinguish one species from the other. Instead, a combination of factors should be used to determine the hawk type. As with this hawk from the Brecksville Reservation, I used the hawk's small stature and the square of tip of tail. And the flight pattern, several quick wingbeats followed by a short glide. |
