Back in August I posted a photo of a Monarch Butterfly caterpillar after it had transformed into a lime green chrysalis (pupa stage). In a little over a week the pupa turned dark green and finally a blackish color, just like the one I have now posted. You will notice that you can actually see the orange and black wings of the butterfly already formed inside.

Well, that first pupa had hatched and was already a fully developed Monarch Butterfly by the time I got home from work. My daughter stopped over and I was able to show my grandson(Travis) this amazing transformation.

I went into the house to grab my camera to get a photo of this newly hatched butterfly, but by the time I came back out into the garage the Monarch had already taken off and was free to roam the fields around home.

I had since found two more caterpillars and kept them in a jar where they also transformed into their pupa stage of development. I took this photo this morning so you could see what they look like when they are just about ready to hatch out. I'm sure by tomorrow or the day after this one will be completely free of it's casing and ready to fly also.

I will post a photo in the workshop of what it looked like just after it's first transformation.

Hello Ron,
a superb picture of the plexippus chrysalis. Although largely dark coloured, you achieved to show
surface details and structures in an excellent way. Light and reflections are well balanced.
Did you use a polarization filter?
Best wishes, Peter

Hello Ron,
this is a very interesting picture.
I have never seen the transformation of a butterfly.
I am very surprised to see the vivid colors of the wings in this stadium. Great composition. Very well done.
Thanks for sharing this wonder of nature

That is beautiful, Ron.
I am a HUGE fan of Monarch butterflies, as you would know if you saw my portfolio. I have always wanted to take a picture like this one, but have not succeeded yet. You give me inspiration to keep trying.
The exposure and focus here are outstanding, resulting in such a clear exposition of the future Monarch butterfly coming through the translucent chrysalid.
A very difficult shot well executed. TFS. : )
