[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The adult male has distinctive multi-colored iridescent plumage and red eyes. The female, less colorful, has a white eye-ring and a whitish throat. Both adults have crested heads. When swimming, wood ducks bob their head back and forth in a jerking motion, which makes them easy to spot.

Their breeding habitat is wooded swamps, shallow lakes, marshes or ponds in eastern North America, the west coast of the United States and western Mexico. They usually nest in cavities in trees close to water, although they will take advantage of nesting boxes in wetland locations if available. Their personality is shy and skittish.

Hi Kris,
this is a wonderful duck and I like his red eye very much as I do with all red eyed birds. He may not be a juvenile but rather an adult male in his winter plumage as they both are very similar looking at this time of year.No matter which he is you have captured him well with good colour and focus that is a little soft but nice.A beautiful duck in an not so pretty setting but ducks are not all that fussy and so I am not as well. Thanks for sharing Mr. Woody with us he gets to be a member of my theme,Red Eyed Birds. Bob

Beautiful image Kris,
I've never seen a young Woodduck before. I rarely see any woodies at all around here unless I walk very slowly and cautiously along the creek bank. They are not nearly as numerous as the mallards, which we see everywhere there is a little water.
Your photo is very well composed with wonderful colors and good detail.
Ron
