An old friend called me the other day...from California. She reminded me, after having someone point out my images on TN, that her father lost his business and almost his life trying to salvage "Sportsman's Dock" from the El Nino Storm. She begged me to search for more images...I found one.

Inside our closet, where people normally hang clothes, we have three very large boxes which are FULL of small prints that never made the pages of albums. So into it I dove and after a few hours of memories and such, I settled on this one. It was noted on the back..."Last surge wave 1983 El Nino into harbour...30 footer."

Noyo Harbor is well constructed but perhaps one of the most narrow, hence dangerous entrances to a main harbor anyone will see. I swear I have seen an 80 foot steel hulled ship on its maiden voyage from LA to Alaska come into the harbour. I was not alone. Word spreads fast in small fishing towns..

Waves do not come into the harbor. Storms usually do not come directly in from the west, accompanied by huge surges and waves at the same time. This image shows a wave as it enters the harbour. It is 30 feet tall on top of surge. I am standing 130 feet ABOVE it with a 55mm lens. As it passed me I could feel the spray from that high up and the whoosh of windy turbulence it brought along. And after this shot, I stayed for an hour or two but the seas suddenly went blank...as quickly as it had come, it left...and the sun rose on the remains of Sportsmans's Dock and the loss of dozens of fishing vessels some almost a half mile inland and around a corner or two of the Noyo river...WOW!

This is great Bob!
A stormy wave captured with great timing, great POV, lighting and set in a perfect composition. Difficult to see the scale but I'm convinced that it could be a 30-footer.
Thanks,
Ivan

i see we're posting very similar subjects at the moment Bob, maybe we should create a joint theme?!
This a great shot. The lighting in it is amazing and you can feel the energy stored up in that wave. Cool POV from way up at the top here too.

Hi Bob. The time i would not want to be in a boat when the sea is like this. You took this one just at the right time. 25 years ago where has time gone. TFS.

Hi Bob,

I can't imagine you being so close to the sea taking pictures of this phenomenon. You've captured the powerful force wonderfully. Would I love to see all the photos in that closet!

Hi Bob

Somple but very effective, my friend!
This a very dramatic composition that needs nothing more than a big wave and splash to attract the viewer's attention and to introduce him/her into the feel of the scene.
The diagonal displacement also helps and the natural contrast of the scene is really terrific!
Very good work with the shutter speed and spot-on exposure, too.

Bravo and TFS

Hi Bob,

another look on the waves from the Ocean, good detail in the water.
Very good picture for a scan and photo out 1983.
Good note too.

Wow! A 30 foot wave is incredible!
The sea looks so powerful and "angry" here.
The timing is spot-on.

Very good work once again Bob!
I do like these old slides :-)

Cheers,
Joe
