When one drives North from San Fransisco on US 101, you do not follow the ocean. You travel in the first inland valley and then the best place to start heading west is at Cloverdale on California 128 which as with most roads coming to the Mendocino coast are windy and tree filled with narrow hairpin mountain turns...and then...as if in a magical Disney Movie...the trees disappear in 1/4 mile length and you go upward along a slim road along a hillside with rises of 75 feet sloping up and downward growing ever fast away until you reach THIS POINT where I am pulled over and parked. There are no words to describe what a person feels when they see the immensity of the ocean for the first time from this vantage point. All of a sudden you know how small you are and how big the ocean is...and you see a blow as a whale spouts...and perhaps far off almost out of sight a 50 foot trawler headed to the 200 mile limit.

This is where many see the ocean for the first time in their lives...it is where the Navarro River ends and where 128 meets the Pacific coast Highway. Do you see any railings? Ha! Rappelling down in cliff rescues is a weekly chore for the Albion volunteer fire Department.

200 million years ago this was geologically a subduction zone. Today it is a strike slip zone right on the Ring of Fire and the San Andreas Fault which comes out into the ocean at Tomales Bay about 30 miles S of this point and follows or hugs the coast all the way up to a point called the MTJ or Mendocino Triple Junction..

Hi Bob
Nice landscape.Good POV , I like the way your image is broken down in 3 components.Razor sharp image and beautiful colors.

Ah, the Pentax K1000... what a great versatile camera. I had a friend (and mentor) Sandy Starobin, who worked for the Associated Press (AP) and was the bureau chief in Harrisburg, Pa., for the news operations of Group W Radio, and was a reporter for KDKA-AM in Pittsburgh and KYW-AM in Philadelphia. In 1980, he uncovered a scheme to fix the Pennsylvania lottery by injecting paint into some of the balls to keep them from rising. The scandal became the basis of a movie, “Lucky Numbers,” with John Travolta. He did quite a bit street photography and photojournalism using several Pentax K1000 cameras... Quite a photographer he was, as well as a great reporter. He is deeply missed. I understand his daughter, Jennifer Starobin is a consultant in New York who works with television-industry clients on matters ranging from coaching on-air personalities to designing sets, lighting and graphics. She helped develop the CNBC program “Fast Money,” approving scripts and managing teams of producers. In 2005, she was the acting executive producer of weekend programming for the Fox News Channel.

Anyway, I ramble... but your note on the Pentax K1000 brought back many memories. :) TFS

Great and interesting photo as always...

Larry

Hello Bob. The horizon is so beautiful. Those hues of blues are like a painting. The foreground color in sharp details gave excellent contrast to the framing. I like the watermark at the bottom right of the frame too :-) TFS and have a nice day. Jusni

Hi, dear Bob.
You and your realtor are wise men. I am happy that I meet you here. Many thanks for warm words of encouragement.

I like how well you can show the beauty of common scene. However, it is common for persons who has not soul and heart. Wonderful POV and framing. I also like so pleasant combination of lovely colours, soft passage from water surface to sky and perfect details. Note as usual very interesting and well detailed. My kind wishes and best regards.
Alexei.

Hi Bob,

As a New Yorker I will never forget my first glimpse of the Pacific Ocean. I had dreamed of seeing it for years and years. We were on a tour bus and I remember when I noticed there were no railings. That was the first time I realized that the United States has as much beauty as any place in the world. A beautiful pictures that brings back fond memories. Also reminds me that since it was so long ago I must be getting old.

Jane

Namastay Bob,
A beautiful capture of the beautiful seascape. Lovely colors and very well composed. Thanks a lot for sharing.
Sincerely
HP

Hello Bob,
Any one will pull over to enjoy the great view of ocean for a while before carry on the journey on the coastal road aside of the image!
I loved the colour contrast here between the land the vast blue ocean, very beautiful indeed!
many thanks for the sharing
cheers
Tony

I ran this stretch of road on foot one time during a long relay from Salem, Oregon to the Los Angeles Coliseum with a group of runner friends of mine.

I was alone and it was in the middle of a moonless night when I ran here. I could hear the ocean and feel the wind, but could see nothing.

Take the third star on the left and straight on till morning - and you'll find NZ.
Did you feel like taking a running jump and diving into the water Bob?
How small man is when you consider the size and massiveness of the Pacific.
Good shot my friend

Beautiful ocean view Bob,
Again this could be a view of Lake Erie except for one thing, and you already know the answer, the water color.
Love the golden colors of the grasses against that gorgeous deep blue ocean.
Ron

Hi Bob

I really love the juxtaposition of strong colours here. Well composed and really catures the feel of the place.

The immensity of the sea is palpable in this shot dating back to 1982, Bob. Its indigo blue hues contrast beautifully with the autumnal hues of the land in the foreground. The partially visible road adds human touch to the picture and at the same time succeeds in conveying the sense of contrast between the eternity of the sea the ephemerality of human existence.
I would love to walk down that path leading to the shore below.
Considering that it is the scan of a print 26 years old, it is a testimony to your skills as a nature photographer even at that time.
So what next, Bob?

Hello Bob, What a stunning image. superb landscap and I really admire your skills and proud to be associated with you. Ganesh

Hi Bob,

The curve of the road and the diagonal line of the horizon are assets to the composition. The point of view leads our eyes toward the horizon. The ligj=ht is enhancing the colors. Have a nice day.
