Some of my older photos were damaged beyond repair, but I remember all too well the drive/walk I took to get this image...and I'll be danged if I am going to lose it...so I converted it to B&W.

This was on the 10 mile haul road (*closed to all cars) which Georgia Pacific used to haul huge redwoods from the forest to the mill. A strange place to build a road eh? Well it lasted until the storm of 1982-3 in which it was completely destroyed by waves.

I am about 5 miles north of the "Pudding Creek Bridge'" and the haul road gate was left open by mistake, so knowing all well I could get locked in there...I drove out anyway...I had a 6 pack of beer with me which I did in fact partake of...albeit only a bit, for liquid courage. I parked the car right on the road and proceeded to take images of the long straight beach, dunes and sea oats...also you can barely see the road on the right...

I stayed for about 45 minutes then quickly turned to get out before I was locked in for gosh knows how many days....and my dashboard started smoking..ever so gently as I approached the gate...I drove on until exiting the gate and to the safety of the public access whereupon the smoke became so thick I could no longer drive. At that point, I took out my tools and proceeded to take the whole dashboard off of my car (A Toyota Corolla Station Wagon)..even though I had never even though od doing so in my life..and I found an "Easter egg". This is a term us in electronics used for something sort of obvious and almost as a gift by Mr Murphy in exchanged for all of his Laws which he applied up till that point. I found a small short, repaired it and put the dash back in. I have never done it before no since...

So you can see why saving this one image is so important to me. It shows an area which is normally no accessible at that point in time, yet is as much a valid and large part of the natural world where sand meets ocean....

For reference, I take you back a few images in a workshop where I posted an aerial of this approximate location Cluick this to see the Workshop of the air

hello bob,
your choice of monochrome has added good effect to the shot, each of your image has a story to tell, sometimes i think when i will see my images after 10/20 years will i be able to think the way you do? You enjoy memories and i love to read your notes, i liked the pov very much and can see the part of the road, i am glad that you get back on time and fixed the minor problem with your vehicle.
tfs & regards
pankaj

Hello Bob
You done a good job converted this picture in b-w . I don't know how it was in colors, but in this way, it looks more...mystic let say. Especially the background, in fact...i suppose it was a kind of fog, no?
All the best, Oana

Hi Bob!
As I see today we both decided to show pictures with beach :>
This one is really nice for watching. I like final effect of converting from colour to BW picture. It has great climat, a little dramatic as fo me, but because of that - very unique and beautiful.
This is absolutely one of your best landscape pictures as for me!
TFS and have a nice evening!
Friendly yours,
Radomir

Hi Bob,

You know I'm not a big fan of B&W but I love this. I can't help but think that this is much more atmospheric than the original color photo was. I love your story to go with it.

Jane

Hi Bob. This looks like an area on the Dorset coast called Portland Bill .Its the road from the main land to a small area of land .which has a prison and a light house . This looks better in black and white it give it a sence of time and space. well done TFS.
Nick..

Hi Bob,
A lovely sense of nostalgia.....nice to take the road into pleasant memories.A bit of the detail has been lost through the scan but an interesting texture has been left making everthing seem to blend in as you are drawn into the depth of the image. Thanks for your kind words on my recent image....take care.
Regards, david

Hello Bob,
This is a wonderful and well composed capture of this beautiful coastline. I like the low POV and the sharp focus on the sand and the grass as a contrast to the distant mist. I also like the beach and the road taking you into the distance. Very nice indeed!
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

Converting it has hidden any problems on the photo Bob. It looks good. It reminds me of some areas of our east coast beaches where sand dunes have grown, and plants have been planted (hopefully) to stop the sand moving.
TFS and have a good week
Janice

Namastay Bob,
A nice capture of this beautiful seascape and also the story behind. Very well composed and I like it in BW. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Sincerely
