It was a hot summer day in 1977 and I had to travel from the Mendocino coast to the Ukiah Valley, about 1 1/2 hours through the coastal mountains into the much hotter and almost desert-like area of Ukiah California. The purpose of this trip was to visit my psychiatrist, therpaist, who qualified me to receive a disability check. And because I suffered terribly from agoraphobia, the trip was not pleasant. My only friends were my wife and my camera.

I tend to take pictures at times to keep myself from becoming too nervous. Strange, perhaps a blessing. They say many artists have some sort of mental problem or perhaps drinking. I had both.

This tree is not very common in Northern California. It was the first I had ever seen. It lay outside of the small town on a dry land barren of most other vegetation. It looked as though we had driven to another planet. And it stood alone on a country backroad. There was no way I was not going to take it's picture. I didn't know what it was and I still don't. I have written many friends and sent messages along...but nobody knows...or perhaps they just don't care. Do you Know?

It is about 40 feet tall and spindly with only small pockets of needles. I have searched all the data bases for 2 days now along with the emails sent out...perhaps it is because it was out of location that gave it an unusual almost bonsai appearance. I am seriously wanting to know the name of this tree. It's picture which I scanned yesterday from small print.....is in my front first California album. Before I return it to it's place I sure would like to know what it is..

Scanned in 2008 on Microtech i800
Hardly any PP work...it was a good image.

Hi Bob, I guess you know it's a pine tree, without a doubt (almost!) because of the way the needles are gathered at the tip of the branch. That's my feeling... what kind of pine, that I don't know! Isn't it amazing this twisted tree came to you just before that appointment! The maze created by the branches echo our own maze in our head! Beautiful picture and the pov is stunning. Thank you!

Hey Bob,
i was only one year old when you stood here contemplating the deeper side of your life...i hope now you have found a more peaceful way to exist! In many ways i think the contorted branches here are a very powerful symbol of the complexities and frailties of the mind. Perhaps that's why you took it, because it was an extension of how you were feeling at the time.. Anyway, whatever the inspiration, it's a great slice of nature. I haven't a clue what it is, but it's twisty branches look almost like a Scots Pine to me..

Hi Bob,

I'm so glad that you said your wife and camera were your only friends - in that order! The ride was almost worth it just for this picture. See, even in bad times you managed to look up. This is beautiful - I love the patterns of the branches and the pine needles. The complexity of it fascinates me. I like the workshop too!

What a agonized look this tree has! Perhaps how you were feeling too at that time Bob.
It does have needles like a Pinus / Pine tree. But they grow differently to those we have in NZ.
Good POV looking up to the freedom of the sky thought those twisted branches
Well done

Hi Bob,
Sometimes the environment one finds itself in makes a stressful situation and one does not flourish. This is true with man and tree. Superb work my friend, thanks for sharing yourself and the image.
Rick

Namastay Bob,
A lovely capture of this beautiful unknown pine tree. Nice abstract work of 1977. Superb composition and nice details. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Sincerely
HP

It certainly is a pine tree, albeit somewhat stunted and gnarled, Bob. The shape of branches and the clusters of pine needles at their tops prove it without doubt.
The forest department planted pines on a vast scree slope near my village in the hills some years ago and, starved for water, they look exactly like this one :)!
My Gestalt sees an abstract pattern in the branches within the frame which I find aesthetically appealing. I wouldn't associate it with your state of mind way back in 1977.
Your story, however, find an echo in my own heart.
Thanks, friend, for sharing this 30 years old image which very clearly bears the BOB stamp for originality.

Hello BOB, you seem to be really enjoying your presentation. We are really enjoying here also. Excellent archives and wonderfully presented. Ganesh

A bit "twisted" Bob... but then that's the way most Psychiatrists see things... LOL. Great POV, lighting, and detail... but most of all the view itself... well seen.

A bit like life isn't it... lots of twists and turns... and too difficult to try and nagivate on our own strength. ;)

Take care Bob... my thoughts and prayers are with you... please keep me in yours... :)

Hello Bob,
Yes, 'life works in mysterious ways' as they say, and the past will always be with us! A lovely quality of this old photograph showing beautiful light and lovely colours of the complex pattern of branches. I'd call this a magic and 'tufted' Pine Tree!
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

Hi Bob, I like a lot your great tree, great POV for a fantastic composition, very well done, ciao Silvio

I developed Agoraphobia a few of years ago, for several months I found it very hard to even leave the house! It's a really horrible feeling but then photography came into my life and I found that my anxiety would almost vanish if I had a camera in my hand. It really relaxed me too, being out in the wild where there were no other people. I guess we had a similar situation :-)
This is one fine shot, Bob!
The quality is exceptional.
I love the angle-of-view.
Very good composition.
Lovely warm colours.

Well done!
Joe
