This has been a very hard year for people allergic to wasp stings. Hundreds of thousands have built nests in and around 4 different apartment complexes including ours. Professional exterminators came out early and thought they had taken care of the "problem". Within one week the complete numbers had returned. the exterminators came once more..and this time it took two weeks but the wasps returned. finally the owners of our complex put out dozens of traps which contained a yellow fluid both poison and attractant. As to me...I am one who is allergic, so I didn't let my love for all of nature get in the way of the removal.

On my walk yesterday, I became somewhat brave as the temperatures were hovering only a few degrees above freezing. Wasps and bees either don't move or move very slowly at this temperature. So I went up in close with this new inexpensive camera and tried it on macro mode.. Because it takes small bursts of images, I put it on rapid fire mode because the wind was slowly moving the trap. Two of five shots came out fairly decent. I thought it a unique approach and quite different way to see the predator.

Wasp, common name applied to most species of hymenopteran insects, except bees and ants. Insects known as wasps include the sawflies, the parasitic wasps, and the stinging wasps, which are the best known. About 75,000 species of wasps are known, most of them parasitic.

hello Bob

and excellent close-up shot of this insect with your new toy,
with lovely yellow colour of the background,
excellent sharpness and details of the insect,
with Fuji you can go with higher (or faster) ISOs
with out having digital noise, but with my Fuji bridge
i did not go higher than ISO400, TFS

Asbed

Hi Bob,

Aaaaaaaaagh - I don't like wasps. Not since, unbenknownst to me, they built a nest under my bicycle seat. Need I say more? Luckily I'm allergic to bees, not wasps. Still taking chances, huh? I wouldn't get close enough to one for a macro shot if you paid me. Well, maybe for a NJ pizza. Interesting shot against the yellow (flower?) background.

Hi, dear Bob.
We had many wasp this year too. However, I could not see their nests as last years near our house. They ate fruits in our garden intensively as never earlier. Your shot is so poetic. Wasp looks like as inhibited in amber. Very pleasant lights, colours and shapes. My warm greetings and TFS.
Alexei.

Good details and notes.

Hi Bob,
Great note nad fine image. I have seen artifical wasp nests for sale and apparently they keep wasps away as they don't like invading anothers territory. Lucys to is allergic to stings.

Nice macro shot Bob,
Looks like this guys been in there for quite some time because he already has some fungus growing on him.
I've seen a lot of these traps, and they seem to do the job. We have many placed on our receiving dock at the bakery because of all the empty honey and molasses drums we store there.
The Yellowjackets and honey bees are attracted to them by the hundreds, so I've had to learn to work around them. I've only been stung twice in 37 years so I guess that's not too bad of a deal.

Hi Bob,
a great photo showing this imobilised Wasp.
The yellow colour is really cool.
Brilliant original approach to this kind of photography.

Well done,
Joe

A stinging picture captured by you where a wasp simply lying on it’s death bed. I know many people hate them, but believe me, once such wasps were my neighbours. They are my room mates. There were at least 11 nests, preserved on my study table because I was busy to take pictures of these little yellow beauties lifestyle. Well, others never tried to enter inside my room but not a single insect stung my. I used to feed them. They gathered around me whenever I brought some banana for them. Their infants coolly used my arms for their after birth walk…… Any how I felt sad after watching the fate of them. But believe they are not harmful. If you disturb them… I think , that is common reflex to all.
