This is a follow-up to my last post of the female of this species. Alexandre refers to a Dr. Alexandre, who discovered the species in the Sierra Madre of Mexico..
DESCRIPTION: This bird measures about 3 1/2 inches & 1 1/2 inches long with a 3 3/4 inch wing span. It weighs about 3 1/2 grams, which is = to a dime plus a dollar bill. The male is dull metallic green above & gray below. He has a black chin & upper throat with a violet, iridescent lower throat which is known as a gorget (pronounced gore-jet). A white upper breast looks like a collar against the gorget.
DIET: Due to its high sugar content, which fuels the bird's extreme metabolism, nectar serves as the main food source. These hummingbirds feed on over 90 species of plants, with penstemon, agave, larkspur, and desert-honeysuckle the most important. They also prey on insects & spiders. They get most of their water from nectar..
PREDATOR and PREY: Sporadic reports of predation include greater roadrunners, brown-crested flycatchers and Mexican jays nabbing flying black-chins. One napping mountain lion at the Sonora Desert Museum "promptly snatched & swallowed" a black-chinned that hovered too close! Eighteen species of hummingbirds occur in the U.S.

NOTE: Having now spent many hours watching these tiny birds in flight I can tell you that their aeronautic skills are amazing to observe. Their unique skeletal structure allows them to fly forwards, backwards, sideways, and on their backs. Hummers can hover, take off vertically & pivot on a stationary axis. This requires a beat frequency of 50 beats per second.
You can see the female of this species HERE
Hope you like it!

Well done on this amazing capture, Howard.
I am waiting anxiously to try a few shots myself of this wonderful species with the 20D, and since I have it, they haven't come around. Hmmmm.
Great detail, especially sweet, are the tiny feet held in front, and the purple throat.
Excellent job, thank you.

And another... :) This one shows his bowtie so nice. Great shot Howard. I like these hummers of yours a lot. Very well done.

Great picture, Howard.

Fantastic colours and details, a real gem of a shot.
The BG is excellent, Nice composition
Thanks for posting

Brilliant, just brilliant Howard. I bet you were very pleased with yourself when you looked at this on the screen.
There is nothing to critique, you show the blurred wings, you've enough (flash)light on the throat & eye. Head, bill, body, tail and feet are sharp and in focus, great background.
Congratulations mate, well done. 10/10

Wauw, what can I say my friend,
fantastic capture, very good in pov and a exelent dof, this is not an amateur shot, but a shot of a prof, very good job Howard,
