So many buttes that they appear to disappear into the horizon..and indeed they do...In this picture one can get a real good idea of just how large these buttes are...consider this...The tiny winding line is a fence. I have stood next to that fence and it is about 5 feet high...Now think of that as you look upwards toward the top of the butte! And from the top, one can see dozens more surrounding this one...some with grasses and some with feed...and some with weed...and some with basalt..slowly then dropping into the Channeled Scablands. It is an amazing site! to see this an know that ancient times people lived here...they never felt they owned it, but there were just caretakers in the oral traditions..

The region of southeastern Washington and adjacent Idaho that has rolling hills on deep soils is known as the Palouse. On its eastern border, this region is bounded by the forests of northern Idaho, and the Snake River forms its southern boundary. To the north and west, the Palouse is bounded by areas of flat terrain and shallow soils, places where the deep soils were scoured away by ice or water during past glaciations or floods. Some scientists use a more inclusive definition of the Palouse; they consider areas to the west and south and even parts of northwestern Montana to be part of the Palouse.

Prior to Euroamerican settlement, the Palouse River drainage was inhabited primarily by the Palouse people. The Nez Perce people spent much of their time in the southern part of the Palouse Prairie, its northern fringes were used by the Coeur d'Alenes and Spokanes, and the Cayuses used the area to the southwest. These patterns were fluid, however, with much overlap between the different groups. The annual cycle of hunting and gathering tracked seasonal changes in plant productivity. The cycle began with gathering roots at low elevations in spring; as the seasons progressed, plant and animal resources were harvested at progressively higher elevations.

Hi Bob. Thanks for the jargons about this beautiful landscapes. Monochromatic foreground with lines and fences are just brilliant with the curve horizon on top. Well managed perspective against the thin veil of cloudy sky. Regards. Jusni

Ciao Bob, great ladscape with splendid shadow, great bocolor composition, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hi Bob,
this is a beautiful picture of a landscape we don't have up here.
The simple colours is lovely and the small shadows with the good deep makes the picture to standout well.
I like the composition with the small diagonal in the horizon.
You are good to get out something special from your pictures.
I really like this.
Have a great Weekend.
/Gert

Hello Bob,

Sites like this are amazing.
They fill you with a deep sense of wonder.
Nature is beautiful, immense and delicate all at the same time!
You always manage to present the 'natural' side of Nature so beautifully unspoilt!

Have a good w/e,
Bev :-)

I really, REALLY like this image. The lighting is phenomenal and it accurately conveys what eastern Washington is like. It is hard to compose images of that great expanse but you've done well here.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the Palouse was largely formed by the colossal glacial Lake Missoula Flood at the end of the last great ice age.

Your picture sure looks like that butte was formed by drainage from that great flood.

I'm probably repeating myself, but the markings of the Lake Missoula Flood in eastern Washington are easily seen from space and are remarkably like similar features seen on the planet Mars! In both cases we are talking floods of Biblical proportions!

The only other great flood of similar magnitude that I am aware of is the one that raised the level of the Black Sea by 6 inches a day for some 150 total feet way back in early human antiquity.

A true expanse...what a big sky and a long way. Great color and light.

Hi Bob,
Very good pisture of this beautiful landscape. Interesting shapes in these rolling hills. Good lighting, DOF and composition.

Hello Bob

I have always felt that we are mere custodians of the planet, the idea of ownership is a bit funny when you put the length of a man's lifetime against the age of the land.
Yet there are many who think they own the place and can harm it in greedy pursuits.
Is it any wonder Mother Gaia is a little sick to her stomach lately?
This vast view of another of the beautiful biomes is super.
you put forward another of the bio diversities we were all blessed with.
Excellent light and lovely natural colours.

Hello Bob,
Excuse,I'm a little late, my son, husband and myself are or have been sick these days.
I have a preference for this kind of "nude" landscapes and even more if they are very fine colors like here for the ground and the sky. Excellent framing and nice integration of the fence on the lower part of the picture. There is such a great quietness, it's also good for the soul.
Thanks
Anne

Hi Bob,
I love the open space in this photo a lot. it shows the emptyness of the plains perfectly. Although this is more a cultivated landscape, the wildness is still visible. I like the softness of the hills and the tracks add a lot of interest to the photo.
TFS,
Niek

Hi Bob,

The different type of lines and geomertic shapes of the field are assets to the composition. The point of view from the bottom to the top is effective. The light is enhancing the golden color of the field. Have a nice day.
