[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Although I have seen American Ladies this year, they don't seem to be around in the abundance we had last year.It is easy to tell the American Lady and the Painted apart by the eye spots on the underwing. The American Lady has 2 large spots and the Painted Lady has several smaller spots. There are several other slight variations in the underwing between the two types, but the spots are a reliable and quick way to make the ID. American Lady Butterflies do not over winter here in New England and migrate to warmer climes in the south.

I find the underwing of both Ladies to be the prettier side of the wings and so I prefer to photograph them in this manner. This American Lady is nectaring on a verbena ( self seeding type).

Lesle, Don't know how I missed it before. This an excellent photo of an "American Lady". Good angle, colors & detail. Great dof through-out the subject & flower. Love the color & design in the wing. Very nice!

Lesley, a delicate, colorful and pleasant picture. Nice pose, great BG and POV. The lady above is elegant, and you did a great to show us her looks.

OK, I am now a fan! I happened upon your photos and have spent the past hour drooling over them. I am not going to comment on each one, but please know that I think they are all great! The American lady is one of the best butterfly photos I have ever seen. Let me take my camera and go look in the garden :-)
Peter
