Nolina microcarpa. "Bear Grass". This hardy grass grows to about 6 ft tall if in the right spot. Normally, however, it is lucky to make it to 2 ft.

Native Americans used to weave baskets from its tough leaves. Indeed, they are difficult to break off! This is of average desireability to ranchers, however, since they are palatable to cattle, but they do not grow or spread in abundance--which makes them perfect for the desert home landscape.

Native grasses are making a comeback in the desert southwest. People are suddenly realizing that water is a scarce and limited commodity! So they are now planting water-wise plants, such as these very attractive grasses. They look lovely even without a sunset behind them!

I like the way you have presented this grass to us David. Silhouetted against this fiery sky has me spellbound. Very nice work.

Hi David, I like minimalism, this is very pure and simple. I like the bear grass, the shapes are very interesting and the BG is superb. Well done.

Hi David. This has lovely colours and composition. You could use NeatImage or another noise reduction programme to deal with the noise to improve it even further. I think it's a very attractive image, the grass has great form and you've used that beautifully. I love your note too, I like to hear about the history behind plants. Is it called Bear Grass because it is tough? Lovely image, TFS :)

This is really cool, just so amazing. You could look at this for an age. I love it.
And what a name Superstition Mountains - Brilliant.
A great post, my only only nit is that it could have been bigger ... Thanks for posting.

Hi David.
Bear Grass by itself looks so graphic that any BG would do, as you mention. These plants, like ferns, are artistically self-supporting. I imagine Bear Grass under different weather conditions. Your sunset is a beautiful BG here, with just the right blur to make it non distractive but still legible. Very nice image and splendid colors.
