Masticophis taeniatus. "Striped Whipsnake".

These animals are very, very fast, and also a bit grouchy and have a reputation for being aggressive. They are excellent tree climbers, and use visual clues to find prey. I guess that makes sense with those massive eyes! The head in this photo is about 2 cm long.

They mate in Spring and lay 3-10 eggs, which hatch in early fall. They eat anything smaller than them: lizards, rodents, other snakes, even small birds, if they can catch them.

While hiking, we came across this lovely gal. She even posed for us in this Boxelder tree! A few pictures and she was off.

Hi David. This is beautiful: well exposed, good dof, and excellent composition. The model helps considerably too :)
This very much has the feel of mutual observation, not always common in photos of our animal cousins.
Excellent.
regards,
Sheldon (shel)

TFS!

Very nice capture David. You were lucky with this one, it's hard to shot reptiles. Well-framed and focused, good work !

This is an excellent head shot David! A tasteful border, well composed, Very sharp, great light, colors and POV. Very well done!

Hi David, found it *grin*. This is superb and superbly scary. I love the way you framed it. It looks like it is looking at me through a mirror which means it is just behind me *shiver*. It is brilliantly sharp with excellent exposure, colour and details. Fantastic composition, everything perfectly executed. Love it :)
Ack! Just read your note, you wern't in a zoo type place? Face to face this close to a grouchy whipsnake. You are braver than I am, or cooler or more determined ;)

Your photography skills are outstanding. I have long enjoyed your landscapes and now am a fan of your great macro shots. This shot is brilliant and creepy at the same time. Well done. The POV conveys a great sense of intimate proximity.

Thanks for letting us see this, I learn from each one of your photos.

Great composition, sharp and clear!
Very good cropping, razor details, wonderful colours.
This snake was one of the most sold in animal shops when I was young.
A great one, I love it.

Hi David,
A beauty and well captured and composed.
Excellent control of the lighting as snakes can show many "hot spots." Well done.
Excellent work.

Mike

I remember that one from TE, David. This composition shows more of the body vanishing in the leaves, and still this inquisitive eye. Great shot and very photogenic subject. Thanks for sharing.

Excellent POV on this photo David. Photo very sharp and beautiful light.
Well done.

That keen use of sight is very prominent in this composition and adds emphasis to the note. There is wonderful detail and a great DOF - just verging on a 3D feel action.

Great shot David! The composition is excellent and the focus on the head is nice and sharp. I must admit I'm not keen on the frame, I think it detracts from what is a fantastic shot, I do accept that frames are a personal ad subjective matter. Very well done.

Very good photo, you were lucky to be able to capture it before it captured you ;)

Very good composition, POV, and DOF. Colour is also very good.

Perfect photo!

Take care, Yan

Superbe David j'adore cette scene et je suppose que tu as du te faire plaisir en la faisant toi aussi.
Tres bon recadrage bravo

David, I like your snake, if you view my photos you will see that most of my snakes are behind glass, although I did take one that I have not posted that was a little to close for comfort in a garden. Good capture

Hi David,

Great compostion! Nice colors! Only point of criticism - in my opinion - is the person in the background. But as you said, take the shot or the snake has gone!!!

Congratulations,
Oki
