I would like to say that this was a purposeful shot, but that would be a lie. I just now discovered that I captured her baby while Mama Marmot stood watch.
I've only seen it a couple of times, so my guess is that the baby is allowed out only under her direction. Of course, we have hawks and eagles hanging around and Mama is intent in making sure her little one will be a survivor.
Lighting was terrible, but sometimes one must look beyond that, and I think this is one of those times.
This is dedicated to all mothers, foster and otherwise. I saw the baby duck, but I had no idea that I'd gotten a capture, so this photo made my afternoon. I was at least 30 feet away if not more. Still, I love the moment...

Beautiful image and great capture Kathy!!
It's always nice to have a surprise like this when you bring your image up on screen.
Mama seems intent on standing guard for her family. Nicely composed with wonderful detail and natural colors!! TFS.
