On Memorial Day or as it was called in previous times Decoration Day, the Red Poppy is sold at most establishments, in paper machete form or Crepe Paper form. Jane and I each buy one..sometimes I will buy one or two. the money goes for good cause.

Monday the 25th was the 'official' government holiday this year. Some, as Jane Magen remember it was the 30th of May and then called Decoration Day. I went to the cemetery and watched as people in this very small town decorated and had a VERY short 'parade'.

So the story goes:
The poppy of wartime remembrance is Papaver rhoeas, the red flowered Corn poppy. This poppy is a common weed in Europe and is found in many locations, including Flanders Fields. Canadian surgeon and soldier, John McCrae wrote the poem In Flanders Fields on May 3, 1915, after witnessing the death of his friend, Lt. Alexis Helmer. The opening line of the poem vividly describes the image of the poppies blowing in the wind amongst the many crosses that mark the resting places of fallen soldiers. Thus the plant became a symbol for the dead World War I soldiers. In many Commonwealth countries, artificial, paper or plastic versions of this poppy are worn to commemorate the sacrifice of veterans and civilians in World War I and other wars, during the weeks preceding Remembrance Day on November 11. In the United States, it is common practice to wear "Buddy Poppies" (artificial, paper or plastic versions sold by the Veterans of Foreign War) during the weeks preceding Memorial Day, the last Monday in May to commemorate the sacrifice of veterans in the various wars;[4] whereas Veterans Day on November 11 is used to honor "living" veterans. It has been adopted as a symbol by The Royal British Legion in their Poppy Appeal. Wiki

These particular poppys had nt yet bloomed but they almost in an artistic sense looked better BEFORE they had bloomed...not sure why..and I did it in square format with signature at upper right..just to be a bit different today...

Hi Bob,

The very few times Barry drove me to the store this month I saw no one selling poppies. I, too, have always bought at least one. I have never seen them in this early stage so really appreciate this lovely shot. Excellent colors, details and textures and beautiful shades of green. I did notice the traveling signature.

Jane

A most unusual red poppy scene indeed Bob, but yet to open buds really look as beautiful as the opened petals, maybe even more enchanting with a pleasant green on green thema. Thanks fot this original scene my friend.
Cheers,
Mehmet

Hello Bob,
You made a very original and interesting composition with these still closed poppies. I like the monochrome impression of the shot and the artistical display of the flower-heads. Well seen.
Have a nice day
Kind regards
Anne

Wonderful shot of the poppy in this stage of its growth. My mother used to have these growing in a backyard garden... within a couple of years they took over... :)

TFS Bob...

You so lucky so lucky! I love papavers, they're my favourite and there are so many in the garden, I would grow papaver, small, big, red, pink, white, everywhere! Cheers!

Hi, dear Bob.
We have many blossoming poppies now around. However, you managed to find and picture very impressive scene. Pattern created by the buds and leaves is amazing. Details, lights and colours are fine. Also thanks for nice comments. My best regards and TFS.
Alexei.
P.S. I am impressed with your warmest comments always and now I am too. I am happy to have such kind friend as you.

Hi Bob,

The macro view is showing the details and colors of the papaver rhoeas. The use of a tripod help to give a clear and precise picture. The subject is well framed. The light has a hgood effect on the colors. Have a nice day.

Pierre
