This is my favorite sparrow - this is not my favorite background. I have seen a Black-throat on a bush only once and have never seen one on a tree. We have no grass here, except on golf courses, so it is rare to be able to catch one in a pretty setting. I hope you can appreciate him in spite of the unattractive bricks.

Black Throated Sparrow

This handsome sparrow of the arid Southwest is well named. Its alternate name, "Desert Sparrow," is also apt, for despite its vivid markings, it is often difficult to detect among the rocks and scrub, especially when not moving about. However, it may be observed when it mounts a bush or rock to sing its pleasant song. The Black-throated Sparrow is well adapted to the extremes of its habitat. Studies have shown that it has a great tolerance for heat and drought. During the hot months of late summer and early fall it maintains itself on dry seeds and drinks regularly at water holes. After the rains, these sparrows scatter into small flocks and feed on vegetation and insects, from which they derive all the moisture they need. They raise their young in the dry upland desert.

5 1/4" (13 cm). Gray above, white below, with striking black throat and breast; 2 conspicuous white stripes on sides of head, 1 above and 1 below the eye. Sexes alike.

Hello Jane
I think the bricks make an attractive background to this wonderful Black Throated Sparrow which is a totally new bird to me.
The focus is spot on resulting in sharp details on this wonderful subject.
I can think of any UK bird that he reminds me of.
All the Best
Billy

Hi Jane. To this bird its natural to be on the bricks rather than grass. Its a cute little bird that must be able to stand the heat of your area. You have been able to take a fine close up with good detail and bright colours. You have delt with the light so well. TFS.

I've told you that's an open invite to you and the family!

I am assuming that birds have no feeling in their feet. Did you know all of our nerves have endings in our souls of the feet and hence massage of the feet is important...oh yes...the bird, if he/she is not hot...is just fine in image:-)

Hello Jane,
Though I agree that the brick Bg is not ideal, it is a fine capture of the Black-crowned Sparrow, the POV showing its features with fine sharpness and lighting. An attractive bird to have around!
Thanks and all the best,
Ivan

Hi Jane.
I like the background. It have done also perfectly. Builders have tried on glory (exclusively Russian expression). You have reflected this cute bird precisely with tiniest details. Exposure and colours reproduction are also spot on. Pictured pose of the sparrow, selected POV and framing of the scene are great. Well done and kind compliments.
Alexei.

Hello Jane

Hi Jane!

I like the introduction in your notes very much: your favourite sparrow, but not your favourite background... Indeed, the bird here is much more interesting and beautiful than the bricks. But they have the advantage to highlight its plain beauty at best. The picture gives us a fine impression of this cute bird and your notes are pleasant and instructive.

Kind regards

Markus

Hallo Jane
The beauty of any Sparrow's neat plumage always attracts my eye and admiration. An absolutely delightful bird with a lovely feathers, orderly as always. The combination of colours of the feathers is really delightful and the way you have captured it from behind displays its back feathers in all in splendour. I must agree with Billy that the bricks make a lovely backdrop. Thanks for sharing. Best regards.

You exploitation of the lighting is right on time.
