[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I was watering the garden early yesterday morning when I spotted this Giant "Promachus" Robber Fly stuck in the birdbath water, barely alive.
So I cupped my hand and removed it, placing the fly on our Butterfly Bush..After a time it revived & dried itself out, then went on its way to hunt another day.

In Greek mythology, Promachus (Πρόμαχος; English translation: "who leads in battle".

This is for old time sake, and dedicated to my old Trek Nature friends.
I thought I should have at least one image in my gallery :)

Thanx for lookin'

While writing a reply to Peter Stoekl's observations on one of my recent pictures a minute ago, I had a strong premonition, Howard.
I sensed that you would be back :)
And lo and behold, the moment I clicked on the Gallery button, your image popped out with its inherent power and force.
Now this is what TN used to look like at one time.
I am so thrilled after looking at this picture that words fail me.
It is the standard Howard Cheek!
The ultimate zenith of perfection.
Please keep posting. We have to learn a great deal from you and we have to be constantly reminded of what real nature photography can be by looking at your work.
Warm regards.
Ram

Hi Howard,

It's soooooooo good to see you again! And to see one of your excellent shots after all this time. You were a true lifesaver to rescue this fly. He thanked you by posing for this wonderful close-up. Another example of your fine work with magnificent natural colors, details so superfine this could be used in a text book, a beautiful setting and composition.

Jane

The Master at work!
It is soooooo nice to have you back, Howard!
I have nothing to say about the shot, but that it's simply outstanding, especially the way the OOF Bg brings out the splendid details of the subject!
bravo!
Goldy

Top class image from the master himself Howard and its nice to see you here :-). I always belive that details are paramount in any macro picture and other things are like beautiful garnish that you can add. Here the details are amazing and exposure is just spot on.

Have a good night

Hallo Howard
This is just wonderful. Not only the detail of the image, also the fact that you have posted again. I hope you reverse the last sentence in your notes soon and change it to "the 1st of my images in my new gallery and the beginning of a new venture with all my Trek Nature friends" The detail you captured on this robberfly is amazing. The clarity is super sharp, the composition just right and the background ideal to bring out the finer details to its best, like the fine hairs at the end of this insect's body. Thanks for sharing and I really hope every time you water the garden from now on, you'll want to share something magic with us, if you see it. Best regards. Anna

Hi Howard

Hello Howard,
when they come, then they come in a big way. I did'nt check on you for a while because you had quit. And now this! The picture means many things, like you did'nt quite get rid of us TNiens, or life continues big even after the terrible drought or you still got enough water to fill a birdbath with.It also means you haven't lost your gift for macros. Good to know all this.
My best regards to you,
Dietrich

Hi Howard,
It isn't only me who says sorry that You finish uploading Your wonderful images we learned so much from. Such a pity it happened this way. But we must accept Your choice, although we all feel the hyatus of You on the site.
Absolutely beautiful macro, perfect using of flash, excellent composition, focus and sharpness - but this is already told by my colleagues before. I wish You good luck - and we all wish once You fully return, sooner or later. Maybe...
Friendly regards from Hungary, László

Hello Howard

Well i found this image purely by chance via a link from another member and i am so pleased that I did. I am a great fan of macro photography such a tiny work all of its own. I have to admit I dont think I have ever seen a robber fly but more so I have never seen such a finely detailed macro shot of an insect. Your lighting and textral detail here is truly outstanding. I will be checking out the links you have in your profile and taking a peek at your other work. If you have a moment please do me the honour of checking my site the link is below. We would be really honoured to display some of your work there too.

Thank you for sharing
Kind regards Helen

P.S.You can find me and more of my images here Perfectly Captured do come and share your images with us too.

Hi Howard,

Man, what a beast! Makes me glad that insects can't get any bigger than they do. Excellent sharpness and detail, perfect lighting too.

Thanks,
John

Welcome back Howard! It is really great to see you again in TN!
Great image with perfect DOF and sharpness (as always in your presentations :>). It is a pleasure to watch such good photos.
From technical point of view there is nothing to add, what I would like to find more in your note is - the size of this fly :>
