[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
At just over 2100m (7000ft) it was still quite cool when I came across this Steller’s Jay (Cyanocitta stelleri) late in the afternoon at Lake Kabib. Of course, just as I pressed the shutter, it turned its head, and then it flew off. I think its good enough to post though, I haven’t seen to many shots of this species on TN. A second shot is in the workshop.

Steller’s Jay live in montane evergreen forests of western North America, at elevations of 3,000-10,000 feet. They area medium sized bird about 34 cm (13 in) long. Steller’s Jays are habitual nest-robbers, like many other jay species. They’ve occasionally been seen attacking and killing small adult birds including a nuthatch and a juncos. They are excellent mimics with a large repertoire, the Steller’s Jay can imitate birds, squirrels, cats, dogs, chickens, and some mechanical objects.

Hi Chris

Top shot, I really like the natural colors and pose here. From what you say it appears to be a rare bird as well - so that has an additional allure to it. Montane species are even more interesting, especially in the context of climate change which will invariably result in dynamic habitat shifts (unfortunately some will get pushed out invariably).

Thanks for sharing
Ravi

Hi Chris,
This Jay has a wonderful blue color. The deep blue eye also well seen. Nice capture of this rare species.

Hi Chris, you do get around don't you. Love the colour on this guy, with very good detail captured on the lower portion. The head is maybe a little dark but perfectly understandable after reading your notes. Nice capture.

Thanks, John

Hello Chris,
A fine capture of Steller's Jay that evokes memories from my visit to California many years ago before I did much photography. I saw them at the Yosemite NP and they were very tame.
The fine blue colours come out well here in this lighting and the OOF Bg helps show it up.
Thanks and all the best,
Ivan

hello Cris
beautiful picture full of greta colours
super shot!!
greeting lou

Hi Chris,
Yes, You haven't had too much luck with lights, but You managed to solve the problem and made an outstanding photography. Interesting composition, excellent focus, maybe a very slight dose of curve adjustment should have done through post-procession, but it doesn't mean I don't like the image. Absolutely a fair pic - I once should like to do such a bird shot where the only problem is the "lack of slight dose of curve adjustment". :)
Great work indeed. Tfs and all the best.
Cheers, László

Nice shot. These guys are not rare and not too shy but nevertheless hard to take photos of. thye do move all the time and like to stay in the partial shade. I think they don't want to be photographs. Good job, you got his eye.
Cheers

Claus
