[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is the American cousin to the Australian Darter I posted the other day. Most people around this area refer to this as the Anhinga (Anhinga anhinga), though it may also be called the American Darter, Snakebird (because of its long neck) or Water Turkey (it spreads its tail wide while swimming). These birds are similar to Cormorants, but have larger tails and sharp bills, which they use to spear their prey. Like Cormorants they need to dry out after a swim, as their feathers are not water proof (to make them better divers and swimmers). More information can be found at the link at Wikipedia .

I shot this one a couple of days ago while kayaking on a small but favourite lake of mine in Orlando. By kayaking I was able to slide right up under this lady while she was drying out in this Longleaf Pine. She was reluctant to fly as it was later in the day (with little sun left), and she was wet, so she tolerated the pesky photographer below her.

Workflow:
I now follow a generic workflow as outlined in my Bio:
Conditions for the shot were a little dark (late afternoon). Shot taken at 200mm, ISO 640, f/4.8, 1/250 sec

Thanks for dropping by.

Hello John,
An unusual image showing an American Darter 'drying out' in a Longleaf Pine. I like the POV showing the stretched out wing and head and most of the neck peeping over the pine needles. The composition, sharpness and side lighting contribute to making this a fine and fascinating image.
Thanks,
Ivan
