[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is a female Lance-Tipped Darner. She has the yellow-green markings as opposed to her mate, who has sky blue markings.

This was one of many and several different kinds we saw during a "swarm". When the temperature is warm enough and the ground is damp from recent rain, usually mid-to late August and September just before dusk, the sub-terrainian ants will emerge from the earth and fly up in the air to mate. This is when the Darners have their "big banquet" or feeding frenzy. They fly slow and low forming swarms of sometimes several hundred scooping the mating ants right out the mid-air. We saw many Lance-Tipped, Canadian, and Mottled Darners in this particular swarm. It's really quite exciting to be in the middle of the swarm with these beautiful flying giants and have them land on you.

This is the finger of a friend who modeled this Darner!

A tame Aeshna constricta ;-)) She looks a lot like her European Aeshna relatives, I felt pretty sure even before looking up the Latin name that this might well be one of those.
Nice and sharp capture with the background thrown well oof. The pink in the background is very prominent, if you could have moved a little right to avoid the pink this would probably have been better, but I like it - finger and all ;-))

Very nice Lesley.
Good macro with nice colours and good sharpness.
Good note.
Well done.

Great shot, how do you do that. I have had my arm out for ages and they never come on to me, well I have had the odd one land on my head but no one to get that on film for me. Well taken and great sharpness.

Very nice Lesley. Excellent detail and DOF. The pink is a little bright but I don't find it too distractiong. Great shot.

It is amazing how tame these dragonflies can be when a warm finger is the resting place.
this one is very nicely seen, I agree with paul I would of cloned out the pink OOF flower I think.

Lesley, Very interesting note. I'd sure like to know what the trick here is! I've seen a number of dragons here where I live but they never co-operate with me like this!!:-( I must be doing something wrong! Maybe I need to get a book on "Dragon Slaying Technique"! ;-) signed, Clueless.
