[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Black Skimmer (Rhynchops niger) foraging at Padre Island National Seashore, TX.
The picture was taken just as the sun was going down. The bird was flying close to shore.

I was amazed how fast it was flying, with the lower part of the bill in the water and the tip of the upper mandible just barely touching the surface of the water.
When the bird caught something in its bill it briefly nodded and swallowed its prey and continued flying.

I used the continuous shooting mode of my 20D but I could barely catch the action on "film" (Sandisk Ultra II).
The picture was taken with an EF 1.4x II extender mounted on the lens.

nice catch Tage. We can see the movement of the wings and the body is very clear. Thanks for sharing.

Dramatic shot. Focus not as crisp as one would like but the difficulties of getting ANY picture are made clear in your excellent note. Perhaps cropping it top and bottom would give the image a horizontal format that might be more suited to the horizontal action of the bird.

Well done Tage. I have often tried to capture skimmers in action in Africa and know just how difficult it is to get it right. Given the light conditions this is a great effort. Special moments like this are what nature photography is all about for me and the small imperfections are irrelevant.

Excellent picture, nice and sharp which probably isn't easy on such a fast moving subject. It looks quite large in the frame, I notice you have a 1.4x extender, but that still only means 280mm, you must have been quite close. How are you finding the extender? It's the next thing on my wish list. I though about getting the 2x but I think it'll make the lens too slow.

Hello Tage

Good timing. This is a great shot! To capture the beak open is extremely fortunate. I am impressed! Well done.

I am amazed that this only has nine points.
Birds in flight are very difficult, and the skimmer has proven to be a very worth adversary while feeding.
Many times better than any attempt I have ever made.
In a perfect world, I would like to see the eye shine...but I am going to let you off this time :)
Keep up the good work.

Great shot
Amazing...
