While snowshoeing, I came across these tufts of grasses, protruding from the snow. This is Western Wheatgrass (agropyron smithii), a native staple of the western U.S. found just about anywhere.

Flowers are certainly lovely, but I just love grasses, too. Each has its own characteristics. There are two major kinds of grasses: cool season and warm season.

Warm season grasses include species like Bermuda and Buffalo grasses. They manage to survive in very warm climates, but go dormant in the cool temperatures--and in very hot temperatures with little water.

Cool season grasses are earlier to green up in Spring and later to go dormant in the Fall. They also go readily dormant in hot weather with little water.

Western Wheatgrass is a cool season grass, and spreads by both seeds and stolons, creating a loose sod. I've used this grass in experimental lawns as an attemmpt to save water. It didn't work by itself very well, but with a few other species, it does make a nice ground cover, though it's a bit course to the touch.

This is a highly palatable grass for native animals of the browsing kind, and for cattle. It often has lovely bluish stems. Here, I was just taken by the lovely simplicity of the gentle grass stalks with the snowy background. I'm glad that on TN we can share some things we think are beautiful with each other.

Hi David, firstly you did well with the WB. The composition is minimal and I like that. Perhaps a little OE on some of the whites but it's a tough one to expose! This is a simple and pleasing shot and a refreshingly different image. Nice note on grasses.

Well done.

Hi David.. I enjoy the simplicity of the composition keeping the grass the focus of the shot. It is amazing that they make it through the harsh times. Very graceful and beautiful photo :-) Thanks for sharing with us.

Simple yet very striking. A fresh approach. :) Well done, David.

Fantastic David,

Hi David, I like this very simple but artistic shot very much, and I think you have good exposure on the whites, which is hard in the snow. Good job well done.

Hello David, this is another gorgeous photo and its simplicity, characteristic of you I could say :) This would be so nice on any walls framed with the other pic on TE: the fence.

Good composition, well balanced, lovely almost monochromatic colour.

Have a great day. Yan

Very nice artistic shot David, exposure was critical here and you done a great job. I feel the composition is a little tight. 6/10 Well done.

I like this David. Simple elements composed well that make a statement - perfect title for this capture, giving the viewer a good idea of the what the photo/artist is trying to convey... Very well done.

David, how I enjoy simple things when they really work. It's difficult to be simple (I like this paradox).

Great pov and composition; an excellent idea.

Congratulations.

Hi David,

I agree, what a capture and well composed. You controlled the whites well. A simple composition of the grasses, yet very effective, artsy. Excellent work.

This shows how much impact something simple can have - If captured correctly. This is actually a very difficult scene to capture because of all the white, but you managed to maintain very good detail on the grass. The composition is excellent as well.

Great shot!

Hi David.
I like the movement here, with grasses oriented backwards and their base going forward. I guess that's what is called sense of composition :-). The result is sober and efficient in it's simplicity. Very good handling of whites, leaving our eyes to follow subtle curves. Well done my friend!

I like the pattern very much. Is a very simple but effective photograph . Jim

A very pleasing, simple shot. Could do with a little more space horizontally, bit it's not too bad. Good detailed note.
