The Orb Weaver spiders (Araneidae) are the familiar builders of spiral wheel-shaped webs often found in gardens, fields and forests. The family is a large one, including over 2800 species in over 160 genera worldwide.
Generally, orb-weavers are three clawed builders of flat webs with sticky spiral capture silk. The web has always been thought of as an engineering marvel..
It is built by the spider starting with a line floated on the wind to another surface. The spider secures the line and then drops another line from the center, making a "Y". The rest of the scaffolding follows with the radii of non-sticky silk being constructed before the final spiral of sticky capture silk. The third claw is used to walk on the non-sticky part of the web.
The prey insect that blunders into the sticky lines is stunned by a quick bite and then wrapped in silk. If the prey is a venomous insect, such as a wasp, wrapping may precede biting...

I used ISO 400, exposure bias -.7, TRIPOD and remote shuttering..
The spider is on the stamen of the red hibiscus flower. Some of the bright red petals from below the spider have produced a slight red cast to the abdomen.
Hope you like it!

The shot is a nice one. I've not seen one covered in pollen before, remarkable. Excellent details colours.

Very nice capture Howard with amazing details to explore. Composition is good as is the dark bg. I would be tempted to use a cooling filter on this just to tone down the overall reddish of this image. The slight red cast to the abdomen would still be there. 7/10 Well done.

Great macro Howard,
Good detail and great POV. Nicely exposed. Nicely composed. Excellent notes and nicely framed.

Howard,
A beauty with fine details. Excellent shot. The reflection of the Hibiscus is an added bonus on the spider.
Excellent work.

Fabulous capture, I have also captured this spider but your shot on the hibiscus adds a lot of interest. Great DOF and pin sharp. Thanks!
