I believe this is a species of Penstemon Pachyphyllus, or Utah Bluebells. They bloom on shady hillsides in Spring. Despite our dry state (10-15 inches of rain per year) they tend to grow in soil that retains its dampness from snowmelt and shade--at least in Spring. They are sure pretty, but you have to look up at them to see inside the bells.

I'm constantly trying to bring originality to flower macros, so I was on my belly with this one, twisting with my camera up towards the sun. It's an experiment that may have promise for the future, so I'd love your thoughts.

David, first of all, thanks for visiting me. I'll try to identify the bird on the bridge.

As for your picture, I did enjoy it. I like pictures which bear light effect.

Nice to see a plant that is from a family so often grown as a garden flower in europe. I like the view very much its a little dark, but I think a touch of shadows/hightlights would make a difference in the right direction IMO.

The hardest part of shooting a flower from it's underside, is the sky. I tried it a couple of times, and the sky seems to be overexposed. Perhaps the use of a polarizer filter would help, or a cloudy day.
I like the angle you chose, but the sky parts aren't too good. (now I feel bad, oh well).

Hi David, and welcome to TN. Glad you made it here. These b'bells are very nice, some of the truly blue flowers of the world. I like the combo and the mood.
As for the bright highlight, the old card you abd I talked about a year ago would have solved the nit. Also, you can just clone over it.

It is of very beautiful flowers that I have never seen. Maybe it would be an idea to resume the experience to avoid all these circles of light that disturb our pondering. Bravo for the attempt.

Ce sont de très belles fleurs. Peut-être serait-ce une idée de reprendre l'expérience afin d'éviter tous ces ronds de lumière qui dérangent notre contemplation. Un gros bravo pour l'essai quand même.

David, I had to smile when I think of you laying on your back trying to shoot this. Because of the quality of the photos you produce, my guess is that you were concentrating very hard on just the right angle, composition, lighting, etc...., talking to yourself and the flower, totally immersed in the image and moment. Pure comedy to the passerby. And I only mentioned this because a fisherman suddenly appeared out of nowhere the other day and asked me who I was talking to. I was wrapped up in a fading sunrise and cussing my camera for not shooting the contrast series frames fast enough.
I'm not any kind of expert on macro shots, and have never tried one. But I see good use of lens placement to diffuse the incoming light. I also enjoy the light and shadow coming through the petals in the center, highest flower.

Deeb.
