Summer Tanager.

Cut the grass Howard, my wife says. But with temperatures near 100 degrees and a heat index of 105 it's not my favorite thing to do lately ;-)
I was set up for that hummer "standing on its head" shot when I observed this small Summer Tanager juvenile busily feeding on my grass turned-to-seed lawn..It was interesting to watch closeup as it would grasp a stalk of tender seed and glean it like corn on a cob. It was very close and at first paid me little attention. This allowed me to get a half-a-dozen shots off before it took flight..
ORDER: Passeriformes
FAMILY: Thraupidae
The Summer Tanager is a Neotropical Emberizid finch in the Tanager Subfamily. Adult males are completely red, while females and first year males are greenish yellow (seen here). Second year males exhibit various combinations of adult and juvenile feathers. The adult male looks very similar to a cardinal, without the crest.
Hope you like it!

'Howard, ty leniu, marsz kosic trawnik!' ;-))) I bet your Polish wife said something of this kind. But - as we see here - sometimes cutting grass also is good for nature photograph ;-) Good photo, sunny and green, very nice bird, captured in good pose. I like it!
Greet your wife my friend!

Hi Howard,
Very good light and very nice pose, great composition.
TFS!

Excellent capture Howard,
soft colours of ground and sharpness.

Hello Howard,

Good capture! The BG is nice and the details on the bird are sharp. Composition is good and you managed to get the all important catchlight in the eye. The shade on the chest is a little disturbing but nothing serious. Well done & TFS!

Regards,
Pieter

Hi Howard!
Stunning capture, as always! LOL at your note about not cutting the grass. I can relate as it's hot as hell in Georgia too! Beautiful POV and pin sharp focus.

What a nice bird well captured ! I like the green composition in grass. The bird pose is lovely. Good sharpness and details, we can see in his beak ! Thanks for sharing Howard.

Hi Howard,
Glad you posted it, it was worth the wait. Excellent shot and well composed, beautiful lighting. Excellent friend.

Mike

Howard, I think that if the grass had been cut you wouldn't have got this shot. So now you have a real excuse not to cut the grass.

Green on green is not the greatest contrst, yet this shot has a lot of things going for it. The seeding grass is a much better background/foreground than lawn for starters.
Great composition, POV and DOF as usual. Plenty of good plumage detail and a nice pose, well done.

Story and subject go along together very well! Despite the difficulty to get this cute little one visible enough hidden in your texan jungle :-), you come with a beautiful image of a not less beautiful bird. Good eyes, and right moment to catch it so well. Well done Howard.

Hi mf Howard! I do not have the time to write a decent comment. I give to you the well deserved smiley.

" With more birds like this one you would not need to cut the grass!!! "

Thank you for sharing pictures and notes and for the enjoyment which they give to me.

Have a wonderfull day!

Hi Howard,

Scott

Great shot Howard!
Very clear and sharp. Good colors and composition. Very well done. TFS!
Helene

Wonderful detail, Howard. I can see this little fellow feeding happily on the seed. I suspect he is pretty happy that the grass hasn't been mowed :-) I like the monotone aspects of the shot. It looks as if you were laying flat on the grass for this POV. Very nicely done! :-)

Good shot Howard
Good detail and great POV. Well composed. Good colours & notes.
Early morning rush!
Well captured, thanks for posting

Wow, Howard... an impressive shot. There is a lot of life in there. Very sharp focus and good light. I really like the details and colors on the feathers. Congratulations and TFS. : )

Superb shot Howard!
The bird looks well camouflaged among all this grass and that doesn't help to get a good shot, but you've managed to do this. The BG and FG is very busy, but doesn't seem to be distracting at all.
The framing and superb POV helps to show this fellow really well.
Overall, very interesting post.
WELL DONE & TFS
