| Acer rubrum (Red maple) at the White Mountains. In autumn the leaves die, nutrients are absorbed back to the stem and the pigments come apart. The first one is the green pigment (chlorophyl) which reveals, after its disintegration, other pigments like the red one seen in this picture. There is no apadtive value to autumns leaf colours, it is just a process of leaf wilting. |
