[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is a juvenile American Goldfinch feasting on the seeds from a spent Black-eyed Susan flower in my garden. I put out thistle feeders for the Goldies, but at this time of year it is so refreshing to watch them feeding from natural sources.

I think it must have been a good year for Goldfinches around here because I had dozens of juvies in my yard each day for about a 2 week period. The majority seem to have moved on, but I still have a few that have stayed behind. Classically the American Goldfinch will migrate to a warmer climate for the winter, but more and more I am witnessing a large population that stays behind and winters here in the northeast of the US. The males brilliant yellow and black cap turn to a lovely burnished gold for the winter and can be seen in backyards as well as the wildlife sanctuaries. Truly a bonus of color for a long drab New England winter.

Lesley, I would love to spend a few days with you in the field to see how you approach birds. Insects are so much easier :) Do you use somekind of a blind?

Excellent picture and very good note. I wish there was clear background behind the head but that is a infintesimally small minor point on this.

Incredible shot Leslie, i love the colours and the sharpness, so the background is a beauty, congratulations (i wish to have a 100-400 canon lens ) you make some wonderfull photo with that one,
