Early morning reflections on the C&O Canal. I had hoped to catch an early heron or cormorant, but maybe it was too cold and windy on the Potomac River for them today ...
The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal was built as a link to the sea alongside the often impassable Potomac River (see my view of the rapids at Rapids on the Potomac ) from the Ohio region using barges. No sooner was it completed that the railroad from the same region made it essentially unnecessary. Till a few years ago, it was used for excursions using a horse-drawn canal boat, but huge floods a few years ago on the Potomac destroyed part of the canal and it is only slowly being restored. |
