[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This, a follow-up to yesterdays post, was shot into the sun around 6:30pm. I found other species yesterday but after many attempts/failures, this, the most widespresd of the Sympetrum species, was the only one that would sit still! Although in this one the dorasl side borders on over-exposure, I like the effect of the suns light illuminating the wings, head & thorax. A Variegated Meadowhawk mature male, apparent because of its red face. The thorax has two oblique lateral white stripes, each with a distinct round yellow spot at the lower end. The yellow always remains visible, but the white becomes obscured in mature males. The wings are clear with yellow veins in the costal & subcostal areas have a tan pterostigma, bordered by yellow & red. The legs are dark brown except in their outer surfaces. The abdomen is grayish with a yellowish orange middorsal stripe & orange rings apically. SIZE: Total length: 33-43mm, abdomen, 23-29mm, hindwing, 27-33mm. Shot in shutter priority, ISO 100, pattern metering, EV -.3 & flash @ -.3 - Alternately titled "The Sun On My Back"???

Excellent macro Howard, with very good details and sharpness.
Perfect DOF and composition... personally please the effect to me of the sun on the insect, but it had proven with EV of at least -1 to avoid superior over expose (only one personal opinion). Bravo.
Bravo!.

Hi Howard, I like the overall affect with the backlighting here. However, a mugshot from the previous post migh be MORE affective, the colours were berre in the head there, but not this lovely light, Can't have all, unfortunately.

Howard, I love the lighting it certainly shows off his hair style. I also like the effect of the light through the wing veins. I would like to see the ends of the other wings, would it improve it? I don't know, maybe.

These Sympetrum seem to have more respect for the photographer than the UK ones, your dragons seem to choose very attractive perches angainst clear backgrounds...have you been bribing them?

A nice capture and the lighting and pose is very favourable.
Nice golden tones on the wings against the clear background.
I'm missing these critters already and can't wait till next spring!
A good shot,well done.

Good detail just a pity the one wing got cut...interesting color though, what was it sitting on?

Howard, nice lighting in this one, beautiful golden colours. I wonder why you do not use the 800 pixsel size TN offers, that way we cold see larger. Thanks.

I think you made use of the light to the extreme here Howard. This is a nice interesting composition. Very different to what I have seen here. I like this a lot. Even if it doesn't show the whole insect. :), lol. Just fascinating.

I like this setting! The setting sun highlights the speckles, which I presume is dust from the nearby road. The sharpness is good and so is the DOF.

Thanks for posting

Fantastico dettaglio, stupenda la trasparenza dell'ala, interessantissimo il controluce che valorizza i dettagli!
