[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I have no idea why this Swan was named the Mute Swan and if anyone does know I would greatly appreciate it if you would share that tibit of knowledge! It does have a longer tail than other swans and is relatively heavy in comparison. You can easily and quickly identify this swan by the black "bump" on it's bill and the bright orange color of the rest of it.

Although the books say we also have Tundra Swans I have yet to see one in my area. So the Mute Swan is the only one I have seen and photographed. When in flight their wings make a loud humming sound which other types of Swans do not. I have heard this sound as I photographed a Mute Swan this past Spring flying so close to me that I didn't have time to pull in my 100-400mm lens and couldn't get a focus on it until it had flown by me. The sound was deafening...well maybe not deafening, but it was loud!

I grabbed this shot just yesterday afternoon in my neighborhood. I liked how the autumn foliage reflected in the water made a pretty background for the swan in the late afternoon.

Hi Lesley, lovely shot...the colours are beautiful.


They are called Mute as they make very little noise compared to other swans, it's as simple as that. Another bit of trivia is that swans were believed to sing towards their death, and this is where the phrase swan-song comes from.

A very good capture.
Lovely autumn colours reflected in the water and excellent detail of the swan with good control of the whites.
Nice catch of the water drops from the beak.

Great capture of a lovely creature - but I think the picture would have been much stronger if the Swan was a bit more to the right in the frame - more centered.
But great picture non the less.

This is one of thos shots that belong on a poster. It is simply stunning and I love it.

Lesley, Grace = Unmerited favor. In this instance, "Grace" the photo deserves all the favor I could give it!! It speaks of autumn with your shades of BG. A perfect moment captured, with droplet suspended in space. Reflected concentric ripples extending into time..Oh yeah, & it's a great photo too!! ;-))

Beautiful capture which I definitely wouldn't crop otherwise. The red foliage on the right is a nice autumnal addition. This is the Danish national bird, by the way. Translated from Danish the name is "knob swan" referring to the bump on the bill. Good handling of the whites and the droplets falling make a nice extra touch to the photo.

I love the way you have captured the drop of water from the Swans beak. The reflection in the water is a beautiful colour. DOF superb. Very, very nice image. 11 out of 10!

Grace and fire in this photo the colours are amazing.

The way the swan stands in the middle of those colours is perfect, also the efect created on the water.
