Today I went for a walk in the woods and came across this lovely Barred Owl who was sitting on a low branch sunning itself. I was fortunate because there were no branches or twigs between me and the owl so I had a clear shot. This cheeky fellow sat there and we watched each other with great curiosity for a good 15 mins. before I moved on. He was unafraid of me or my camera and did not leave until I had started to walk up the path away from him. It was almost as if he knew I was finished taking his photo and w moved on to look for lunch.

The Barred Owl will sit on a perch and wait for a rodent to appear before pouncing upon it and having dinner. I have also seen a Barred Owl with a small snake , impaling it with it's large razor sharp talons and then eating it like a long piece of spaghetti with the snake curling it's tail right around the owl's beak. Since I have snake phobia I was cheering on the owl.

This is an excellent shot, the kind that most of us don't even succeed in at the zoo, let alone in the wild. Did you use fill flash? Your 100-400 still performs well. I will bring mine back to Canon, after the repair I can't get any sharp pictures from it anymore.

I have up to five owls visiting the house every night. I stay on the edge of town and they use my roof as a launchpad into the veldt. They do not give me this opportunity though. Very nicley done. The whites shine brightly without being overexposed. Perfect.

Nice shot Lesley!
Good light conditiions.
However the branch behind the owl's head is a little bit disturbing. And the crop is a little bit tight at the bottom.
But very nice job!

A real Wow shot lesley, intresting that the right eye has 2 catch lights and the left 1.
I would agree with Hans I had enough trouble the other evening trying to getting a picture of some owl that where brought to the camera club for us to practice on. for this wild shot it is realy very good and sharp.

This is very nice Lesley! Superb detail throughout the image with great tones, texture & color. The subtle shadow I see that falls across the head adds a nice effect & the BG is interesting without distraction. And those eyes! I see a purple center that zeros you in..Excellent work! A great post!!!

Thanks for going for a walk in the woods and for sharing your Barred Owl with us, Lesley.
Thanks also for telling us the interesting story of your catch.
It is an image which forces me to better work, an image as I like them.

Well done Lesley. You've made the most of a golden opportunity and you have been rewarded.I much prefer seeing animals shot in the wild.Interesting note too.

Gorgeous owl, fantastic shot. Very well done Lesley. I don't think the branch is disturbing, I think it adds to the composition to see it tucked away a little.

Excellent work.

good shot!very nice pose :o) good detail on the feathers and good compo.well, about the branche, you could have went there with a saw and cut it off!lol, no just kidding, i don't think it's realy disturbing.
crop is just good how it is.

You were really lucky. With me even the plants want to run away when I lift my lens:) I often have people mention that the feathers on few owl shots I've got are out of focus when in fact they are not. These feathers can really play tricks on one's eyes.

Excellent work done here and thanks for sharing this beauty

hi Lesly, beautifull owlet, we have similar, identical name but different species. love the pose, your capture, the yes and the "toes" stocking out under his gown. Fluffy feathers" are OOF, but even to the naked eye, the autofocus cannot "hold" it. I have tried often, becouse I love fat fluffy birdies. So, no nit with his collar, as Japie mentioned.!!

Fantastic shot!Every time I've seen an owl,it flies before I can even try for a shot.Excellent work,just love it.Thanks

Beuatiful - I'm an owl nut, and this is one of the best. Nice soft feathers, not oversharpened.
