Name: Cirsium arizonicum
Family: Compositae (Asteraceae)

It grows up to 1,5 m high, having bright red flowers, hairy and spined leaves. It blooms all summer and beginning of autumn.
It likes a wetter habitat than the Sonoran Desert, growing in the next vegetation zones: chaparral and ponderosa pine forests. Native-americans use this plant for medicinal purposes.

Pretty color this thistle has. The fill flash works well to make this photo stand out.
Nicely captured!
Thanks for sharing,

I am curious about how hard it is to harvest the seeds from thistles now that I know some birds love them :-) I've spent a small amount of time in the Sonoran Desert. We used to pull up lawn chairs in the evening and sit back to enjoy the lightning displays. They were awesome. I have never seen any prettier anywhere else, and it was almost a daily evening event.
