The PELICAN

What a wonderful bird is the pelican
His beak can hold more than his belly can
He can hold in his beak
Food enough for a week!
I wonder how in the hell 'e can?

-- The Pelican, attributed to Dixon Lanier Merritt, 1910

Merritt’s limerick is not strictly correct, as pelicans store their food in a throat pouch, not in the beak, and they don’t have beaks in the first place, they have bills. It is very memorable though, I still new this from English lessons more than a decade ago.

These two were fishing. The light brown joungster (on the right) was applying the new knowledge quite successfully, as you can see if you compare the volume of his bulging throat pouch with that of the adult (left). He was making the plunge and came away full, always supervised by the old fellow in front.

This is the brown pelican, Pelecanus occidentalis.

Superb capture, one to be proud of, excellent exposue and detail, well caught action.

Greg

This photo really deserve a good rating. The way I look at it there seem to be a conflicting DOF that makes this one look like a composite image. I could be due to the movement of the wings.I maybe wrong and it might be just me.

Hi Gabi,
Excellent capture on these pelicans. You stopped the action perfectly. The detail, color and clarity in this shot are superb. Great job!

Wow! This is certainly an excellent and beautiful shot.
Two for the price of one, well seen and well captured!
The POV, the DOF, everything just perfect!
A masterpiece Gabi! IMO...
Wonderful!
Thanks for sharing,
Dave

Excellent capture. Details and action stopping are spot on. You killed or more aptly photographed, two birds with one stone. However too much of a good thing can perhaps be also a bad thing sometimes. What I'm thinking here is that though both birds have been captured beautifully both "together" in one frame isnt necessarily a good thing composition-wise. It confuses the eye. But of course thats entirely a subjective opinion and its a debatable point. Anyways, its a good image so thanks for sharing!

Well captured and sharp. You stoped the action very well and kept the depth of focus. Well done.
