Tufted Titmouse Baeolophus bicolor (Parus bicolor)

Family: Paridae, Chickadees and Titmice

Description 6" (15 cm). Sparrow-sized. Gray above and whitish below, with rust-colored sides and conspicuous gray crest. Black-crested Titmouse (B. atricristatus), found in southwestern Oklahoma and Texas, is similar but has black crest.

Habitat Swampy or moist woodlands, and shade trees in villages and city parks; in winter, at feeders.

Nesting 5 or 6 brown-dotted white eggs in a tree cavity or bird box stuffed with leaves and moss.

Range Resident from eastern Nebraska, southern Michigan, and Maine south to Texas, Gulf Coast, and central Florida.

Voice A whistled series of 4 to 8 notes sounding like Peter-Peter, repeated over and over.

Discussion Titmice are social birds and, especially in winter, join with small mixed flocks of chickadees, nuthatches, kinglets, creepers, and the smaller woodpeckers. Although a frequent visitor at feeders, the titmouse is not as tame or confiding as a chickadee. It often clings to the bark of trees and turns upside down to pick spiders and insects from the underside of a twig or leaf. The Black-crested Titmouse, found from southwestern Oklahoma and northern Texas south into Mexico, was until recently considered a subspecies of Tufted Titmouse.

In my personal observations I have noticed the titmouse is not as tame or confiding as the chickadees as the discussion above mentions. While the chickadee lingers and opens the sunflower seeds, the titmouse seems to regularly "grab and run" minimizing their time at the feeder.

Hello Dave,

Wonderful shot of this titmouse!

Nice profile and eye contact, great POV.

Details, while sharp seem faded a bit, and I thought I would try a ws.

Thank you for sharing your new discoveries with us!

Hi David

Running late this morning so a quick critique, but enough time to look at this lovely shot. Well composed, good colour, but focus is a bit soft. Thanks.

Hi Dave,
Excellent closeup on this Titmouse. Howard's workshop really cleaned up some problems and showed how nice the colors and detail really are. I am guessing you are shooting thru some glass by the appearence. You are really getting closeups here.
Scott

Dave I think you have done a really good job, you are improving with each shot, this time the detail and the composition both have improved, to that I say nice job indeed!

Just a view point in respect to presentation, you goal is to present the subject, in this case the bird to the viewer and have him/her transfix their attention to that subject. With that being the case your frame should not detract or demand equal attention as that of the primary subject. So what I am saying is to get the viewers attention you must direct the viewing area, if the frame is as interesting as or is designed such that the viewers eyes are directed to the frame, you will lose the viewer. A frame if used should help to contain the shot and assist in focusing the viewers attention to where you want. When I viewed this shot my attention was drawn first to the frame, then to the bird. I hope I am making sense, to summarize on frames what I am saying is keep it simple, do not let the frame carry the same weight as the primary focus point.

Greg

A very good shot. I like the note too. Maybe a little bit soft focus, but I think you took the shot at night or in very poor lighting conditions. That makes things mor difficult to get in razor sharp focus, even if you use AF.

Regards, Petru

Nice profile headshot Dave. Yes, they are a "grab & run" kinda bird with very quick movements. I did a workshop to try and improve your shot today..

Hi Dave,
This is a lovely shot!
The titmouse is soooo sweet, nicely perched on the branch. The composition is good with the branches framing the bird nicely. I tried a workshop. I hope you don't mind :)
Well done!
Claudia

Hi Dave, good capture of the pretty little fellow. He looks so good there on the tree. I love his colours.
The WSs are good, and will be good for you to study and see how to improve this yourself. Do you have a PP software? I had no idea when I first started posting here what it was all about.

Hi Dave
Well met. I like your intro, and yes, 1000's goes to the bin, but the one that works, that is wht makes trying worthwhile.
I have browsed your portfolio, and as a general comment, would suggest the use of fill flash on the birdies, especially. Overall composition is fine on this titmouse, but again your camera is not really up to what you are trying to achieve - this should not stop you from trying, and you learn along the way.
Have a nice feastive season
Callie
