Well, last day at home in Virginia and this little guy stopped by to say good by. All future shots posted will be comming from Delaware. Funny, last day in the house we got snow, strong cold winds, and yet the birds still came around for me to get some shots. Hope you like.

The level of difficulty on this shot was that I had direct sun, shade and the snows reflected light working against me. Still I was quite pleased at my results.

Greg

Description:

The Dark-eyed is 5 to 6 1/2 inches long. The bill is pinkish and the eyes are dark. This bird varies geographically. The eastern "Slate-colored" race is uniform dark gray or brownish gray depending on whether it is male or female.

Mating Habits:

Dark-eyed Juncos are generally monogamous (one male to one female) defending their territory during the nesting and breeding season. Although these birds vary in appearance, they will breed freely with one another.

Nesting Habits:

The female builds and places its nest on the ground near tall vegetation. A cup shaped nest made of grasses, moss, twigs, and lined with rootlets. The female lays 3 to 6 gray or pale bluish eggs with dark blotches. The female incubates the eggs for 12 to 13 days and the young leave the nest about 9 to 13 days after hatching.

Feeding Habits:

These birds feed mostly on the ground, eating weed and grass seeds. In summer these bird feed mainly on insects.

Great image Gregory!

Hi Greg,
Friday Night Party night.
Only time to see this post deserves a big smiley.
TFS. Have a great weekend.

Great shot, Greg - we have a few Junco's up here in MD, and they seem to like the snow ... Very well exposed - as you say, the snow and bright sunshine today make it difficult to deal withthe contrast - you did a fine job. Enjoy Delaware - will you be birding at the sanctuary up there? I'll look forward to some great winter views!

Hi Greg,
Very interesting shot!
Excellent exposure, good colours and details.
Well done!

Nice shot with an excellent exposure, snow is always a challenge when shooting dark contrasty subjects. Well done Gregory. :)

And you have good reason to be proud, exposure is spot-on, excellent shot with good detail and colours. The thingy on the left is not very pretty but together with the bird makes a very nice composition, naturally providing the shot with an in-picture part-frame. Very well done!

Gabi

Amazing shot! Very well composed, and the details, sharpness and lighting are excellent

Hi Greg,
I would say you nailed the exposure here perfectly. The colors and detail look fantastic. The contrast of the bird against the snow is wonderful.

I agree you did very well given the difficult situation. The details are sharp and the exposure well managed. The bird needs to contrast a little more with the BG round to make it stand out. Well done.

Hi Greg,
Lovely shot! This is such a cute bird and I like how it is positioned in the photo surrounded by snow. The bar on the left really adds to the composition, framing the photo nicely. Good details. Well done!
