Sanderling (Calidris alba)

I found a larger group of Sanderlings regularly on the beaches of Sanibel Island. When they foraged dashing in and out of the surf they were much too fast for my photographic abilities to capture.
Here I was lucky: they were patiently holding an extended siesta up on the beach until I finished taking all the photos I could possibly desire. The three photos above are with the last batch I took, when the boss at the front of the group decided it was time to get back to some foraging work after all and started off.

“One of the most widespread of all shorebirds, the Sanderling turns up on almost every beach in the world. As a wave comes roaring in, the birds run up on the beach just ahead of the breaker, then sprint after the retreating water to feed on the tiny crustaceans and mollusks left exposed.

description 8" (20 cm). A starling-sized shorebird with conspicuous white wing stripe. Summer adults have rufous head and breast, white belly. In winter, rufous areas replaced by pale gray, and birds look almost white. Bill and legs black.”

P.S.
My first collage – I am SURE there must be an easier way to do this than sizing black BG and photos exactly right and shifting around until more or less aligned (I used PS CS and I don’t really know what I am doing).
Can anyone explain how to easily create a passepartout frame with “holes” for the photos to go in?

Technical: ISO 200, my "Tri"pod is a monopod, works best for birding for me.

Hi Gabi.
This is what I call a well managed DOF, accurate and precise :D
Beautiful set of images, clear and detailed. Nice to see this scene.
See if THIS helps.

Cute Gabi!
I love the bottom shot with him floating above the ground in his hop.
You put this together very nicely!
Thanks,
Dave

Hi Gabi

You have done a great job here. Nicely composed. Excellent set of shots, good colours and POV. Sharpness and detail are spot on. Well done. TFS.

Nice collage of this interesting little shorebird, one of my favourites but sadly declining in Australia. I especially like the way you've caught the bottom one in mid-hop, great camera work..and a bit of luck. Good exposure on all three, clearly the 20D has a great metering capability as I've mentioned to Fisher recently.
Can't help with the holly frame, I do it the manual way you describe.
A slow but effective method.
Thanks for all your critiques of my work. Feel free to be as critical as you like. I don't often respond, but I do read and consider every critique/comment I get, that's how we learn. Oh and I'm never offended by harsh critiques.
Now all I need is to win the lottery so I can buy a decent camera.
cheers
Chris

Nice presentation Gabi,
Good detail and colours. Great POV and sharpness.
Nicely composed and good exposure.
Thanks for posting. Have a good week.

Fantastic! I love this and the poses are unbeleivably real. Great exposure control. Very well done.

Hi Gabi,
A nice collage on these Sanderlings. Good exposure and colors. Detail is sharp, and DOF appears to have been just enough to get your subject sharp and blur everything else. I can spend hours watching them.
