[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is a Reddish Egret that has found a nice perch on a brush snag at low tide. This scene is from an interior open water area at the Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge.

At this time of day the sunlight was getting very bright and harsh. I really liked the scene, but did not quite have the long glass needed to fill the frame the way I wanted. I cropped off some of the top and bottom of the original shot to get this composition.

Reddish Egret
(Egretta rufescens)
Identification
Reddish Egrets are large, slender egrets with long legs and long necks. This species has two different "morphs," or color patterns, with very different appearances. White morph birds are all white, while dark morph individuals have rusty head and neck feathers and slate gray body feathers. In both color morphs, Reddish Egrets have bluish-black legs, and thick bicolored bills with pink bases and black tips.

Distribution and Population Trends
In the United States, Reddish Egrets are year-round residents of the Gulf Coast of Texas and both coasts of southern Florida. This species also breeds along the coast of Louisiana. In Florida, Audubon's Hillsborough Bay Important Bird Area provides nesting habitat for 45 to 50 pairs of breeding Reddish Egrets. This species can also be found as year-round residents along both coasts of Mexico. Caribbean populations occur south to Costa Rica, while Pacific birds reach Panama. Small numbers of Reddish Egrets breed along the coast of northern South America, in Colombia and Venezuela, and the species can also be found in the West Indies.

Good one Scott, under difficult conditions you managed well. I like your choice of compo that shows the habitat with the bird on its perch and the reflections in the water. Don't think I have seen this bird, or if I did I got the ID wrong. Got to check my archive ...
Regards,
Gabi

Hi Scott,
This looks pretty good to me. Good choice on cropping. The bird is very pretty. It would be nice to see a closer shot to enjoy the colors on the head and neck more...;-( This is a good composition though, and you have done very well in spite of not having that long lens.
Thanks,
Dave

A very good choice in cropping to complement the shape of the brush. The light seems well controlled to me so I wouldn't worry about a harsh feeling of it. TFS

Hi Scott,
Very nice picture, great natural colour,
good focus on the bird with details.
Well done and thank you!

Hi!
Your photo is so sad... this lonely bird looks exhausted and unhappy. But I like nostalgic photos sometimes :-)

Nice shot Scott,
Good detail and colours. Great POV and sharpness.
Nicely composed and good exposure.
Thanks for posting. Have a good week.
Have a very merry Christmas and Happy new year.

Scott,
I appreciate you mentioned that you cropped this to change the composition. I learn MOST from photographer's notes. You made a semi panoramic picture out of this which works well. The posture of this bird is beautiful and the way you caught it perched is well done.
Once again, a very complete set of notes and a great post!
Scott

Outstanding shot showing this birds watery environment well Scott. This "brush snag" as you call it makes an interesting roost. Very well composed with a great pose from the egret. Well done my friend,
Merry Christmas!

Hello Scott, I think this is very nice. Firstly I love the look of the water, with this light and angle it looks like oil - which is a compliemnt :-) I love way the beauty of the heron emerges from the mess and tangled raft. Lovely composition - the space is very good. Great shot.

Happy Christmas

I love those egrets! Well seen, Scott, great lighting and composition.

Happy New Year!

Alli

Hi,
good shot, composition, details, POV, etc.
Ana:)

Beautiful scene... You certainly go to nice parks. In India most are a terrible disappointment. Poachers kill everything ...
