Name: Opuntia acanthocarpa
Buckhorn cholla
Family: Cactaceae

The Opuntia genus is split in three subgenera, depending on the stems shape: the Corynthopuntias have club shaped stems; the regular Opuntias have flattened stems; the Cylindropuntias have cylindric stems.

O. acanthocarpa belongs to Cylindropuntias.This cholla is common in Arizona, Southwestern Nevada, Western California, presenting a wide subspecies variety. The usual color of the plant is green, but under harsh conditions (cold wheather or drought) becomes reddish.
Flowers are big and showy, usualy yellow but sometimes orange or red too.
The Pima Indians are steaming and eating the flower buds.

This is my third post in the "Stinging beauties" serie. I just want to show you that Arizona desert is more than needles and spines.

Hi Petru,
Excellent shot on this stinging beauty. Very well saturated colors. Breautiful yellows. Nice sharp detail and good DOF. Your other stinging beauties look great also. What is the best time of year to see these? I am guessing early spring in the desert.

wonderful color saturation and clarity. great macro with great amount of details. you have used the light very well here.

How do you know this is Opuntia acanthocarpa and not Opuntia versicolor?

I have been struggling trying differentiating those two species. The green stemmed versicolor is a lot like the acanthocarpa.

Btw... I added your cactus blossom pictures to the 'cactus flower' theme I started. Hope that is OK with you.
