I wish you all a Very Happy and Uplifting 2006 with blue skies aplenty.

For that seasonal feel to this 1st post of 2006, I present you with the SNOWY egret (sick of real snow already).

Snowy Egret (Egretta thula)
- Distinguished from the great egret by its smaller size , its black bill, and yellow feet.
- habitat: marshes, swamps, shorelines, mudflats and ponds
- Main food: fish, crabs, amphibians, insects
- breeds on the Atlantic Coast, the Pacific Coast and the Gulf Coast and in some inland areas.
- winters from California south to South America on the west coast and from Virginia south to the West Indies on the east coast
- breeds once a year, the 3-5 greenish blue eggs hatch in 3-4 weeks.
- platform-like nests built primarily of twigs, located low in trees or on the ground

Snowy egret plumes used to be very popular on hats, resulting in these birds being hunted to near extinction. However, the snowy egret has made a recovery and is no longer hunted.

Hi Gabi,

Beautiful shot and well done on the composition.

Nits, white is blown and there is a glow around legs and beak, over sharpening. It's what I'm seeing on my New Flat panel monitor.

Gabi, Terrific shot of beautiful bird. Clarity and description make it excellent.

Well composed, great POV and detail Gabi. I like the light cloud BG, it adds nicely. Perhaps a tad over, but so close this is subjective IMHO. Well done.
Thank You!

Happy New Year to you and yours, Gabi.
Very apt image. Great composition and POV.
Thank you for all your great photos and critiques,
and to many more in 2006!

Hi Gabi,
I really like the shot! Very beautiful composition, and frozen perfectly in a great pose. I got a few shots of Snowys strutting down the beach on Sanibel, but no good in-flights. I need alot of practice on those in flights. Happy New Year and I am looking forward to your 2006 posts.

Hi Gabi, awesome shot of the Heron. The whites are a bit OE, but you did well capturing it in flight. Good composition, TFS,
Janice

Hello Gabi, very good inflight shot. The composition is excellent. Maybe the whites are a little burned but it's hard work catching them in flight and a bright white egret in the sun is always going to be tricky.

Very well done.

Gabi, in my opinion, you did great with exposure. I also enjoy composition and contrast a lot.

As for sharpness, when you need to apply a little bit more (Mike mentioned the halos), try duplicating the layer, apply the amount of sharpness you need and, then, use the erase to get rid of the halos. Finally, flatten the image.

I hope this helps.

May we have a good 2006.
Great and seasonal (as seasonal as the winter can be in Florida) shot.
You managed a great deal of sharpness and details for this inflight shot.

Regards, Petru

I'll "smile" in a couple of hours. Now I just ran out.

Update: here are the smilley, and believe me, I'm smiling with all my teeths.
