White-breasted Nuthatch Sitta carolinensis

For more info see Animal Diversity Web

I used Petru's tip and set the exposure up +0.7 for this shot.
I cropped, used smart fix, and adjusted midtone contrast slightly. The frame is the untouched origional from which you can get an idea of the difference.
I have a little more work to do to figure out where I can set up to shoot through an open window. This is taken through my french door glass.

I know you would not have a hard time believing that a little chickadee gave me a nice pose today too...;-)
I shot a titmouse, redbellied woodpecker, and a downy woodpecker male too. But, only the chickadee and the nuthatch were decent enough to post...;(

Thanks for all tips, comments, and critiques!
And, thanks for looking!
Dave

ps added a workshop showing an alternative view the nuthatch gave me today...;-)

Hi Dave,

You did well with this capture and the use of flash is just right.
It is nice to see the eyes from one side, but, that's nature. Take what you can get. ;)

David, you've got this one in a great pose.

Excellent pov and composition.

I like colors too.

Little by little, you are improving you skills - that's really nice.

Hi David,
Well composede picture, showing the Nuthatch in his natural habitat. Flashlight is used in a good way, sharpness OK. Good job. TFS and regards, Ruud

Hi Dave
Good detail and colours. Great POV and sharpness.
Nicely composed and good exposure.
Thanks for posting.
Have a good week. I hope you had a good Christmas and New Year.

Hi Dave,
Very big imporvement! The exposure looks excellent. Nice colors, and good detail. Looks like you PP helped even more.
Your wife is probably like mine, and cannot understand the need to remove a window pane to install an open shooting area. They just don'r get it!

Generally the birds are more beautiful of profile. Of face they almost always have an idiotic air. Callie taught me that a long time ago.
Since I look at your photographs, I ask for myself a question: Do you use digital zoom while taking your pictures?
I saw your camera description.
I dont know your camera settings.
You have 5mp as mine. I always take my shots at 50ISO, maximum resolution 2592 x 1944 super fine.
You have a 3X optical zoom so you have to be near of your subjects to have them sharp. The 5mp allows to crop a little your original shots.
You improve yourself a lot since your arrival on TN. Your thirst to learn is large.
You must know well your subjects, to anticipate their movements. They have their practices, like us. In fact, they are like us and sometimes I think that they act more intelligently than us. They are much more than of simple subjects to protograph. With time we learn how to appreciate them for what they are really and it is your task to discover what they really are.
This is your best shot untill now, IMHO.

Good Luck Dave and thank you.

Glad I could help :-)
The contrast and colour balance came up fine.
The focus seems to be also less softer.
This is a great job you did here, Dave.

Regards, Petru

PS: The workshop post is great also. Gives a tridimensional look to the bird! :-))

Excellent POV, very dynamic, something like POV of cam in action movie with car chases. Nice details, brown colours made good composition.

He, he, great workshop David :-)
