I took this photo at the Yellow River Game Ranch. It is an amazing place with dozens of deer that will eat out of your hand. They are wandering the ranch and get into the pens with other animals. This doe was very affectionate to the rabbit and was licking her incessantly. I hope you enjoy this sweet picture!
White-tail deer have good eyesight and acute hearing, but depend mainly on their sense of smell to detect danger.
Males antlers are shed from January to March and grow out again in April or May
White-tail deer have numerous scent glands on their legs for intraspecies communication and secretions become especially strong during the rutting season.
At birth, fawns are spotted with white and weight between 3 and 6 lbs.
White-tail deer wave their tails characteristically from side to side when they are startled.
White-tail deer may bound at speeds of up to 40 miles per hour through tangled terrain in a forest.
White-tail deer are good swimmers and often enter large streams and lakes to escape predators .
Antlers do not serve as weapons against predators, but are used during the mating season, when the males fight to breed with females.
White-tail deer are the most nervous and shy of our deer.
Only male deer grow antlers, which they shed each year.
For Native Americans and early European settlers, deer meat (venison) provided one of the most important sources of protein.
White-tailed Deer remain the most popular large game animal throughout most of the US. |
