This is a followup shot to my previous post on a pair of White Pelicans. The two pelicans had been sitting on the log resting. One jumped in and went for a swim. This pelican finally got up, did some wing flap stretching, and they went for a swim himself.

The day had been partly sunny, and the sun was setting behind me. Clouds moved in and dropped the light level quite a bit, but This allowed for the contrast to not be to harsh. The horny plate on his upper mandible, and the extended feathering on his head is the start of his breeding plumage.

White Pelican
Pelecanus erythrorhynchos

Description - This huge bird reaches heights of 55-70 inches. It is white with a long, flat, bright orange bill and black tipped wings. During the breeding season a short, yellowish crest appears on the back of the head and a horny plate appears on the upper mandible.

Distribution - The breeding pelican is found from Mackenzie, British Columbia south to northern California. Wintering grounds are from central California, the Gulf Coast, and Florida south to Panama. They prefer shallow lakes to coastal lagoons.

Biology - This pelican is gregarious, usually travelling in flocks and nesting in colonies. 1-6 white eggs can be found on a low mound of earth and debris. They do not dive for food but cooperate to surround fish in shallow water where they scoop them into their pouches. In recent decades the number of pelicans has dropped drastically because of the use of pesticides, human disturbance and the draining of wetlands.

Hi Scott!

I like it! Perfect exposure and composition. Big bird is detailed and in nice pose. I like also grey water on BG.
I've made workshop with alternative framing.

Beautiful ready to action shot, Scott.
No critiques or comments on the technical side because I don't see anything to bother me.

Regards, Petru

Hi Scott, great action shot - looks like it's a case of, "Will I? Won't I?" That's interesting seeing the breeding plumage and growth on the beak; I personally think those ugly added bits would be a hindrance to his beauty, but then I'm not a pelican!
But an excellent capture, the whites are spot on and all is nice and sharp too. Well done.

Hi Scott!
I never saw a Pelican in the real life.

This is an excellent shot. A not easy one, with all these white areas. Sometimes it helps to have clouds. IMO, you managed very well under this light condition.
Thank you.
Have a great week!

Hi Scott
I like the pose of this pelican with it's wings up. It does look strange with the bump on it's bill. Good POV.

Nice composition, good moment details and contrast, good photo.

healthy looking felllows. In India they have pink ones as big as me. You certainly see beautioful animals and birds!

Scott,
Great action shot! Good notes and I love the fact that you had the shoreline in the background. This is one cool shot!
I notice the curvature of the pelicas left wing resembles a airplane. Great focus and the 1/160th worked well here.
Very nice work.

Hi Scott,

Thanks for your very kind words on my "colorful view" picture; it's highly appreciated! I've also recently bought a better tripod and a remote shutter release. :) I understand exactly where you're coming from; NL isn't very scenic and I have to rely on my trips aswell. Back to your picture! :)

This is a very nice picture. The exposure really is spot on and the pose is great. POV & DOF are really good and details are sharp. Very well done & TFS! Have a great weekend my friend.

Regards,
Pieter
