The Black-chinned Hummingbird (Archilochus alexandri), is a small hummingbird. Male green above with iridescent black chin underlined by violet-purple throat band. Female (seen here), green above with white throat and breast, buff sides, and white-tipped outer tail feathers. In East, female not distinguishable in field from female Ruby-throated.

The male Black-chinned, like all hummingbirds, maintains a mating and feeding territory in spring. He courts his female with a dazzling aerial display involving a pendulum-like flight pattern. When mating interest wanes, the male often takes up residence elsewhere, near a good food supply. Later, when plant blooming and insect swarming subside, the birds move south.

This was shot in late August of last year. I used ISO 400 and an exposure bias of -.7, clear & sunny.

Thanx for lookin'

Hi Howard!
Beautiful picture with excellent detail!
I'm ready for some summer time action again. I think I have some winter time blues from not riding my bike enough. A cold day will turn me around faster than anything. I'd take and enjoy 105 degrees over 55 degrees.
Great title!
Thanks,
Dave

Very nice shot!
Good colours and details!

Merci mon ami Howard.

Ok, so I had to look, but, only out of pity... :-)

Hi Howard
What a capture ! The birds' eye is so sharp and just out of the way of the moveing wing. Excellent details such as of the green flecks in the feathers. I like the blurriness of the rest of the image.
Regards Toni

They are so fun to shoot but extremely difficult to get a shot, nice work Sir.

Hi, Howard.
Wonderful shot I have missed during my holidays. Excellent sharpness just there, where it must be. Well composed. Nice DOF and colors.

Very good capture, very good performance, you lucky to have those humming birds that we in Israel don't have...
The double light spot in the eye is not contributing to this frame.

Hi Howard,

Absolutely, positively, perfect. Beautiful capture and well done on all counts. Super work.

If you can P.M. me with how to use flash with 1/2500 etc. that would be very helpful. If you would like to share. ;)

Mike

Hi Howard!

Seems that they are faster that a plane, Superman and Speedlight (flash). But I guess that's what make them so scheming.
Even with such a shallow DOF, you succeded to get perfect focus on the eye with a nice glitter from your flash. Most of its body being parrallelle to the sensor plane is also in very good focus. The rest of the image being out of focus, all the attention is on your main subject.

Splendid image and TFS.
