Well I braved the cold today, bundled up, and seeded an area in my woods and waited for birds to arrive. Did not have to wait long thank goodness, my shutter finger went numb! Several species of birds showed up, Titmouse, Junco, Harris Woodpecker, Red Bellied Woodpecker, Bluebird and Nuthatches. I managed to get pretty decent shots of the lot, that and I got frost bite! ;)

So, the first shot I decided to post is of a Red Bellied Woodpecker, it’s the shot my wife liked the best, so this one’s for the wife. Hope you like it, I braved the cold to bring you the shot… ;)

Greg

Beautiful sharp image and simple composition. I like the shallow DOF. He doesn't look bothered by the cold! I hope you have thawed.

Hi Greg,
An excellent shot! Perfect composition and framing. The exposure looks great, and this has given very beautiful saturated colors. The detail is very sharp, and your control on the DOF was perfect. He really stands out well from that nice OOF backround of contrasting colors.

Excellent! Running late today Greg, but well deserved :-) Thank you!

Hi Gregory,
just perfect, what a wonderful sharp shot, I like it very much. It's such a shy bird and you could capture him so close and pretty, thanks for sharing

I have only ever seen these in pictures, since we don't have them here in the northwest, but in my opinion this is the most beautiful of the NA woodpecker species. I have always wondered why they called them 'red bellied' when red is never visible on the belly in any of the pictures I have seen. Why not 'white faced', since 'red headed' is already taken? LOL!
Wonderful image, Gregory!

Hi Greg,
You have some fantastic shots in your gallery. This is beautiful, I guess a classic woodpecker pose. The colours are excellent, exposure spot-on. A clever composition also, I would have been tempted to crop from the left to the edge of the tree trunk, I probably wouldn't even have considered doing this. A lesson learnt today.
Cheers,
Adrian
