Spilosoma virginica. Virginian Tiger Moth.

I am not a caterpillar expert, so please correct is this identification is wrong. This was very difficult to identify.

This caterpillar, assuming my identification is correct, will grow into a Tiger Moth. It is also called the Yellow Bear or Wooly Bear caterpillar.

These critters feed on maple, birch, walnut and other trees; this was spotted on a maple tree. They emerge from May through September.

My kids like this and wanted to keep it as a pet. I said, "Sure! You can keep it as a pet for 5 minutes." They were disappointed, but we studied it for a few minutes and then did other things.

These insects will eat all season, then hibernate. In Spring, they eat some more! Then in a few weeks, they form their cocoons and become moths. This will be a lovely white moth when it's grown.

Hi David, interesting composition. I like the way you have off centred the subject to the left. Good detail and colour. TFS.

Hello David!
This is a well composed macro, great POV. I think The narrow DOF works well for this type of shot. Very well focused and sharp where it needs to be, an excellent job. Well done!

Hi David,
Very nice shot!
Excellent off-centre composition,
good side lighting, great POV and DOF.
Thanks for sharing!

Hi Daid,
That is a great looking caterpillar! The composition and framing of the shot look excellent. Although the DOF is shallow, it works well for this shot. Exposure is spot on, rendering some very beautiful and well saturated colors.
A really cool shot!
Scott
