Eclectus Parrot
Eclectus roratus

DESCRIPTION:
13 3/4" long. Male and female differ so radically in plumage that they were once thought to be separate species. Both are glossy, brilliant birds. Males are primarily green and females are primarily red. The males have yellowish bill with some red areas and brown eyes, while the females have black bills and yellow eyes. The Eclectus Parrot body is stocky and the tail short and square.

GEOGRAPHICAL RANGE AND HABITAT:
New Guinea, Moluccas, Solomons, and Sumba Islands; also extreme north Queensland, Australia. Limited to lowland forests.

DIET:
Fruit, nuts, seeds, berries, flowers and nectar.

LIFE CYCLE/SOCIAL STRUCTURE:
Noisy and gregarious birds, roosting in groups of as many as 80. At dawn, they fly off to feed in pairs or small groups. Nests are built in holes high in a tree; trees are often selected at edge of a clearing. The normal size of a clutch is two. Incubation is about 26 days. Life span is 80 years.

SPECIAL ADAPTATIONS:
They are strong fliers and on long flights they fly high with slow, deliberate wing beats interspersed with brief periods of gliding.

INTERPRETIVE INFORMATION:
There are 10 subspecies with a west to east decline in size. Observers frequently remark on the preponderance of males (green) seen. Away from roosting sites, females (red) are seen in fewer numbers. Speculation is that they are more timid because of their showy red plumage.

This picture was taken at the Happy Hollow Zoo in San Jose.

Hi Manyee,
The green colour of the parrot against the dark background gives something extra. And its sharpness.
Again a great capture.
Thanks
Vivian

Excellent composition Manyee!
That black background really makes the parrot stand out, so eloquent! The image is >very< sharp. Perfect framing and positioning! Great notes!

TFS;-)

This is a funtastic picture, and nicely captured. These birds are so pretty. Because of their dimorphism, I hope that you got a picture of the female so other trekkers can see the beautiful contrast difference between the male and female.

Hi ManYee
Baie mooi papegaai en foto.
Great shot with very nice POV. Looks like he was giving you the eye. The typical inquisitiveness of a parrot is very clear to see.
Very good composition with the interesting angle that he leans into the frame. Colours are pleasing (a little bit dark though), DOF is good with loads of details visible on the bird, and the dark background (what ever happened to that nice Californian sky) does well to enhance the bird.
Great work and TFS.

Hi Manyee,
A lovely portrait, the colours are fantastic and the dark background sets the Parrot off well, and an unusual angle of the body. Great shot!
Regards,
Adrian
