A lonesome coyote (Canis latrans) roaming free in the desolated wilderness of the Joshua Tree National Park in the Sonora Desert.
It is almost certain you will see one everytime you venture off the main roads and you can even hear them howling at times.
El Coyote is the quintessential animal of the
American West and the Mexican folktales, as well as a spiritual brother to the native American Indians, from where he even got his name, in Aztec language "coyotl" meaning "little wolf".
I was always fascinated by the spirituality of the Native Americans, who saw in him like in many other animals more than a resource or simply an animal. Coincidentally or not, eighteen miles south of where this picture was taken, here in southern Californian desert country, is the Los Coyotes Indian Resevation, this Apache nation having as you can see from their name, an ancestral oath with this wild dog in their homes in the mountains nearby San Ysidro and San Ignacio.
To our Western civilization this animal remains a con artist of amazing survival skills; he was for long time shot, poisoned, darted, trapped or alegedly hunted & killed in endless ways for many reasons: because of pest control, sport, fur, meat or simply beacause it was in the sight of a undiscerning gun.
His outstanding power to adapt to any environment
helped him always conserve its large numbers, never much endangered, ranging on a imense teritory from the frozen Alaskan tundra to the scorching hot deserts of Mexico and southwest USA, he would devour anything in his quest for nutrition: from flowers and seeds to animals more than twice its size, very seldom but capable of even canibalism at times.
On a technical note, you gotta love the light input falling on this guy and his wild glance in the eye, I wish I was this "luminosity" lucky on at least once a hundred photos...

Buena captura Radu... me encantan los colores capturados y sobre todo la nitidez y belleza de su ojo almendrado.
Agradable aprovechamiento de la ilumnación con una bella composicion general.

I like soft light and colours in your pictures, Radu. Good pose and composition. Good to see some sunlight even only on beautiful pictures like that.
